Strange Apple ][e MOD

A friend bought a ][e just after I did, and found that it had this peculiar MOD on the IC S10:

I was wondering if anybody could shed any light on it please?

My own has no mods at all, but is the same mainboard.

It looks like that is a PAL

It looks like that is a PAL IIe? And it also looks like there is another chip partially piggy backed on S10 that most of the components are connected to? Can you see what part that piggy back chip is? Where do the wires run to?

definitely a second chip in there

@Nick3092 well spotted.

Looks like a second chip, upside down on top of the first chip, "dead bug" connected via all those resistors.

what the heck is going on there?

Quick follow up, it is indeed

Quick follow up, it is indeed a PAL IIe, and the owner removed the resistor-pocalypse/dead bug combo and replaced S10 and it isworkinglovely again with colour, before he only got mono.

BTW, the yellow wire goes to the centre pinof the composite socket.

Very strange indeed.

The only thing that comes to

The only thing that comes to mind is SECAM.

PAL/SECAM are identical in monochrome, but the way the color phase information is represented differs, so the mod could be for that.

That makes sense...   and also why it looks entirely foreign to me since over here we only got NTSC models.

Almost nobody in the US would have a TV that could handle PAL/SECAM signals.  I only knew a few people who did back in the day -- all people who had moved to the US from Europe or US citizens who spent time over there, mostly military people.

One of my friends who was stationed for a time in the late 1980s in Germany had a Phillips TV (at least I think it was a Phillips -- not a brand that was real common in the US) that was switchable between NTSC, PAL and SECAM and also had split inputs and a few other nice features.  It was also switchable between 110V and 220V.  I think he got it at the PX over there.  I never saw one like it sold in the US.

Ahh, that sounds like a real possibility and might explain why when it was fitted he had no colour.
