Problems after moving to leopard

I have recently changes all my computers (Powerbook G4, intel core 2 duo 17" imac, and intel core duo Mac Mini) to Leopard.
Whilst the G4 runs without problems, I've had a load of problems with the other two...

The Mac Mini is in work, and I've been using Entourage (as well as the other Office 2004 apps) to run on the (Windows) exchange. There were no problems with OSX 10.4 but all of a sudden, I've had problems with Leopard.

Everything seemed alright at start, and I got everything working OK, then, ALL Office apps refused to start. i also found that any thing downloaded onto the desktop couldn't be seen on the desktop, but could be seen from the HD! Any DVD's inserted wouldn't play, and any blank disks I wanted to burn onto wouldn't do so, and an error message came up. Any DMG downloads I tried to open would try and open through the disk utility. My external firewire hardrive refuses to mount, although it will on an other Mac.

I first blamed Mocrosoft and office 2004 for not being Intel native, BUT the problem persists on the 17" iMac despite doing a clean install.

Weirdness!!

I hope someone can explain this, but no one on apple's site have come up with an answer...

In hope
Gwion

Permissions issue?

Just a thought, but a lot of what you have described sounds like permissions issues.

I would recommend trying the following:

- In Disk Utility, do a "Repair Permissions" on your boot volume, or on the drive/partition that holds your home folder, if it's not /Users

- Try creating a new account in the Accounts pane of the System Preferences. If you log in with that account, and the same problems occur, then you will know the issue is systemic, not user based.

- If both of those fail, try booting from the Leo installer and doing a "Repair Drive" from Disk Utility.

... and let us know if any of this works...

I'm afraid I've tried all tha

I'm afraid I've tried all that. When I create a new account, everything seems fine for a short while, and then, It all goes pear shaped!

Thanks for helping.

Both Intel's, but not the PPC?

If you can work normally for a time, then problems begin to creep in, it will be a systemic issue. If you work normally for a time, and then *WHAM*; suddenly you have problems, it is something that is being installed or is running.

The fact that your PPC is working fine, but both Intel Macs are having problems would tell me it has something to do with the installation or installer. Is it possible to try a different installer DVD?

Also, this will sound like a shot in the dark, but have you checked the RAM? Bad RAM can cause a number of wierd problems, and I've seen "creeping" or "cascading" problems that were do to a bad stick.

When you switched to Leopard,

When you switched to Leopard, did you simply upgrade your existing OS X installation, perform an "archive and install", or reformat the hard drive and perform a clean installation? I would try one of the latter two options; I've had bad luck simply upgrading an existing OS X system.

The first time, I did an arch

The first time, I did an archive and install. When I first noticed the problem, having created a new user 6 times to get over the problem, I decided to do backup everything, ensure I had disk copies of all apps, and do a completely clean install.

It has, however persisted! A friend of mine who has many years experience of using Macs reckoned I'm somehow giving off negative vibes, or the computer doesn't like my name!!!

Hunph!

it does happen out of the blu

it does happen out of the blue, as you say *WHAM*

I've been unable to work out exactly what is running at the time, but had suspected Office for Mac 2004. It has however happened when Office isn't running.

As to the install disk, I have tried 2 different disks.

RAM wise, it would be really weird if all computers would have problems with the RAM, especially becoming apparent after OS X upgrade?

With thanks

Yes, that would be very weird. Improbable, but not impossible.

To me, this will indicate that something is happening to cause the problem. Perhaps a general perusal of your /var/log/system.log may shed some light on the problem.

... also, simply because I've had problems with this in the past, do you have any Unsanity anything installed? The Application Enhancer has caused me more than a couple of problems, and I always recommend uninstalling any Unsanity haxies... but that's just me...
