I have a iMac 450 DV+ and I want to use it as a media server with an upgraded hard drive. I have a ReplayTV that networks very nicely with OS X, but has limited hard drive space. I would also like for it to be in a cool case that I can put in with all of my home theater stuff. I have shopped around for a vga -> s-video converter and they seem to be a reasonable way to use my tv as a monitor when I need to (if I can find a cheap one). Does anyone have any ideas for this mod?

yes i do. What you are doing is streaming video/music from imac to Tv. that would be awesome, just use airtunes and sitck an airport card in it. then have a cable for video.
Airtunes only works with an Airport express base station. I have a 400mhz iMac running in an old atx case next to my sterio. Hacked the power supply to run it. I installed a 80gig drive and made a new ribbon cable to reach the cdrom drive mounted in the case. Then I installed a vnc server so my wife could controll it with her pc at her desk. We rip all our music to it and run iTunes out the sterio.
That's the functionality I want, but I do also want it in some kind of interesting case that fits in with my equipment. Was there a trick to upgrading the hard drive? I know the ATX power supply needs a little coaxing.
Na, just plug in the new drive and run the install from your osx cds. I don't know if there is a max hd size for the iMacs, but 80gig works. I was trying to use the origional 10gig one and mounting a shared drive off the server but couldn't get the thing to auto mount at startup. You really don't want to use the same case setup I did. I have the board mounted in the center of the case so I can get to both sides of it. Wasn't thinking when I made the power cable and didn't give it a bend. Now the video cable sticks out one side and the power out the other.
Find an old DVD/VCD player case and mount it in that. You could get an external AC->DC converter like you find on laptops and use that for power.
Hacking a power brick would be much more diffuclut than using a small ATX ps and using existing conversion methods. A 1U ATX supply would fit in a DVD/VCR case easily.
Ok, So Im a newb and all you guys are just going to laugh at me....
But I what I would like to know if you guys can help is:
I can only get itunes to play thru my airport express and I want every app to route thru there.
Is this possible, If so how?
Any help would be most appreaciated.
Thanks.
Myles.
This is pure conjecture, but can you play streaming internet stations through the AP Express? If so you could set up a local stream of audio from your system, tune to it with iTunes, and from there everything over the stream should play though the Express. That's alot of extras just to get all your sounds to the APXp though.
