Most Tricked out rig.

What is your most tricked out rig (i.e., Computer, gaming machine...)?

How much do you have invested in it?

What did you do to trick it out?
(if you have it documented, just post the url.)

What do you use it for? (i.e., business, gaming, tinkering...)

and the final question...

What made you decide to, if I may say, enhance it?

I will post my most tricked out rig in a post below...

My most tricked out rig...

Has got to be my Pismo. I have got about $200 worth of accessories in it. (I am quite budget tight, so that is good enough for me)

I have now got a DVD/CD-RW, a 20GB Hard drive in it, a USB 2.0 PC Card, an airport. I am looking into get a Zip drive for the module (Dankephoto, I am still trying to get that airport card for you.) I rececently had to put a new screen on it as I broke the old one.

I mainly use my Pismo for business.

PowerMystic Color Classic

I've got three tricked-out rigs, and I'm not sure which would count as the most tricked-out.

(1) Color Classic PowerMystic:
- 640x480 VGA display hack
- LC 575 motherboard
- Full '040 CPU
- Daystar 66MHz 601 PPC PowerCard
- 132MB RAM
- Comm Slot ethernet
- 2GB hard drive
- Silver case with matching mouse and custom rear panel
- Pulsing blue power LED

(2) Takky PPC Color Classic:
- 640x480 VGA display hack
- Power Mac 6500/300MHz motherboard
- 128MB RAM
- 20GB 2.5" hard drive
- Black case with matching keyboard, black NeXT ADB mouse and custom rear panel
- Triple-boot: Mac OS 9.2.2, Mac OS 8.1, BeOS Pro 5.0.3
- Farallon 10bT PCI ethernet card - natively supported by BeOS

(3) Quadra 700/Power Mac 7100/G3 with LCD:

- Power Mac 7100 motherboard
- NuBus/PDS G3-266MHz CPU card
- MacPicasso 340 NuBus video card
- Asante 10bT ethernet NuBus card
- 72MB RAM
- 500MB hard drive (all I had around at the time)
- Mac OS 8.6
- Customized black Quadra 700 case
- Acer Airkey wireless ADB keyboard with built-in mouse control
- Matching black Dolch 10.4" LCD monitor

The two CCs I purchased from others who had done the case painting and some of the mods. I did more mods to bring them to where they are now. I use them mainly for fun, but also for some Web-page testing and for the occasional Classic-only software situation.

The Quadra 700/PM7100/G3 I did all myself, and for fun. I did it because I had obtained the basics - the 7100 mobo (free), Q700 case ($1.25 for four!), Q700 case feet ($4), ethernet card (free), RAM (free), and keyboard ($3) - for less than $10 total, and I wanted to build a compact Power Mac. I found I could add the colorant (spray dye), G3 card and video card, and still keep the total cost under $100. The monitor was a lucky find on eBay. It almost doubled my cost, but still kept it all under $200.

Honestly, I don't use it for much, and will probably sell this rig in the near future. It's incredibly cool, and it's faster and more expandable than my Takky, but for my uses I don't really need it.

Sleeper

I call it my sleeper. It looks harmless (before I put on the underglow) and then when you use it, it is blazing fast. It runs faster than my dads stock 1.0 ghz 17 inch iMac running 10.2.8! I WILL NOW NEVER SELL IT....unless for big bucks.

My tricked out rigs

My primary computer is a 1.5 ghz 15" PowerBook G4 (64mb vram) with 1gb ram, 80 gb 5400rpm hard drive, and superdrive. I have edge connectivity via bluetooth with my Motorola v551 cell phone via Cingular. It's quite possibly the best PowerBook I've had since the gold standard (PowerBook 180). I also have a PowerBook 180 14/160/14.4 that I occasionally take off the shelf and play with. My first laptop was a 180 that my parents gave me when I was still in high school.

My secondary is a blue and white g3 tower that was given to me. With some loose bits that were around the house, I built it up to 1gb ram, 3 Rage 128 Pro cards (its original plus 2 from dead b&w g3's), an 80 gb 7200 rpm ata drive, and a 4x superdrive. The only thing that hasn't really been upgraded on it is the 350 mhz G3. It's not the fastest machine, but runs 10.3.8 quite snappily.

My fiancee is running a 1ghz iBook G4 12 inch with 768mb ram, 60 gb 4200rpm drive, and combo drive. It's pretty snappy, and she's already started on making it a piece of personal art that can be used everyday. Her backup machine is a grape iMac DV 400 with 384mb ram, 10 gb ata drive that I gave to her when we first started dating.

She still has the eMachines PC that she had when we met, though it now goes weeks between bootups. We have Verizon DSL at home with the Westell modem that has an integrated 4 port 10/100 router and 802.11g built in.

I'm almost always on the road in some form, and am never more than a phone call or e-mail away from work and family. In some respects, I look back on my college days fondly, as nobody really wanted anything from me then.

Kinda oldschool too...

IBM 386SX 25MHz Chip
on a "Noname" Motherboard
8 Megs of RAM
60MB HDD + additional 120MB HDD
512k Noname Video Chipset (somehow VGA, it supports 256 colors! awesome, isn't it?)
2x SCSI Burner Yamaha CDR-100 (the one with the cartridges) /w Adaptec ISA-SCSI-Card
3,5" Floppy Drive + 5,25" Floppy
12" VGA-Display, max. Refresh 60Hz
Runs IBM-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.11 for Workgroups

...runs Doom fullscreen with over 25fps...
...well, ok, I must admit, it's just something to fiddle around with when you get bored by those slick OS X and Win XP interfaces...
...but I must say that I have spent more time working on this baby as on my Hi-End PC's and -Mac's! (and that's not because it's not working half of the time)

God save the holy DOS prompt!

Retro!

Since they came up, my most "tricked out" retro machine:

SGI Indy UNIX Workstation
175Mhz R4400SC CPU module.
128 MB RAM
XL 24 bit color video
100TX GIO ethernet card (Rare!)
IndyCam
Indy "Presenter" LCD monitor/projection panel

I paid $1 for it.

Beige G4

All prices in $AU (=$US0.80)

Rev C Beige G3 desktop ($600 about three years ago @ 300/192/6G/ZIP)
Sold the ZIP for $85 when I bought it
Full 6MB of video RAM (inc)
512 MB RAM ($200)
Generic USB 1.1 card ($19)
XLR8 G4/450 ZIF ($120)
2x 10GB Seagate Barracudas ($120 and $55)
Tascam US428 external USB audio/MIDI interface and control surface ($799)
19" Sun monitor converted to sync on green by seller, on a VGA converter (for some reason will do 1152 x 870 75Hz no higher or lower) ($40)

Although in theory this is an audio workstation, creative inertia means that it's mostly a net terminal. Enhanced because OS X was a little creaky on the original specs - although I was pleasantly surprised at how well it ran.

Powerbook 1400CS - bought "as is" for $100 about two years ago, as a tinker project - needed a HD and the keyboard and trackpad cables re-inserted. Turned out to be a 133 with 32 meg.
6GB Toshiba HD ($100)
Upped RAM to 48 MB ($25*)
CD and floppy drives ($? ebay)
2 good batteries (about $5-10 ea)
Duo charger (came with a bunch of other stuff)
Replaced missing CD door and cracked speaker grille ($10?)

to be installed: 166MHz mobo/CPU in box. (*$25 with the RAM and bottom case)

Mostly an MP3 player and spare CD player on the home stereo, occasional email.
Enhanced because it needed it! Extra RAM because 8.6 and Netscape Communicator together choked.

Ultimate PowerBook

For when my PowerBook G4 15" 1.5 isn't enough, I bring in the big guns - my PowerBook 180. It has the ram completely maxed out - 14 mb of high performance memory, as much as this bad boy can handle. For storing my large multimedia files, it has the ultimate in storage - a 160mb 4200 rpm SCSI drive with a 1.44mb Superdrive for all my file copying needs. There's only so much the 15" active matrix lcd on my G4 can do, so the 10" active matrix 4 shades of grey lcd works magic for me. Since I want things to be secure via wired network connections, I am able to use the high performance 230k localtalk networking built in.

My first portable was a PowerBook 180, which I sold while in school, but fortunately, I was able to get one just like it from a friend. The 180 is one of my favorite Apple portables of all time. While I had a few Duos, I never really cared for them much. However, the 15" G4 feels like the spiritual successor of the great PB 1xx series.

Über Mac

Original:

PowerMac 9500/200 with a dual (YES I SAID DUAL!) 200Mhz 604e Card. FAST.
64Mb Ram
4GB HD
ATI Mach64 video (4MB)

When she was retrofitted for gaming (2000-2001) she became:

PowerMac 9500/450 G3
512MB Ram (Interleaved for added performance!)
4GB boot drive plus 18 gig 7200RPM "fast" scsi drive which had the games on it
3dfx VOODOO 5500 64MB (I still miss my 5500 really, really, really badly)

Yeah, i dropped a big chunk of change upgrading it, but it was a fun project, and it kicked the $h!t out of a buddy's brand new g4 733 at every game we tested...

Well i have to say my best ma

Well i have to say my best machine is a dual g4 533 digital audio
got it from my school for free, they were throwing it out. It had "VERY DEAD" written all over it.
Added a 256 ram card that i pulled from my pc machine. and 2x 4 gig hd's from imacs i had laying around
Just needs another 512 of ram and a bigger hd.
And its used now mostly for tinkering. And it Will soon be white with clear plastic side panels. I Wanted it to match the new apple keyboard that i had. And it will be my main machine once im in college. Its probably the best mac i have ever owned. It has worked flawlessly under 10.3 since i got it.

My most "tricked out" is my d

My most "tricked out" is my daily machine:

* G5 Case
* Digital Audio Motherboard
* Digital Audio PSU
* OWC 1.25GHz 7455B CPU running at 1.33 (higher speed are unstable under full load, even with voltage tweaks) with Jetway Heatpipe heatsink and 70mm fan on speed controller.
* 1GB of RAM
* ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition with Arctic Cooler
* Dual CRT Monitors
* USB2/FW Combo PCI card (generic no name brand)
* Dual 120GB IBM 180GXP Hard Drives
* Lite-On SOHC-5232K Combo Drive
* Pioneer DVR-108 DVD-RW
* Dual Panaflo 95mm exhaust fans on speed controllers
* Bunch of other misc. stuff I cant recall but is most likely on the page in my sig for this machine. Machine is VERY quiet (I sleep 6ft from it, and it runs 24/7). And stays FAR cooler then a stock G4 case would with these components.

My most hopped up machines ar

My most hopped up machines are as follows:

HP Kayak XU 6/450

Dual Pentium II 550Mhz
448MB RAM
4GB Ultra SCSI 10,000RPM Barricuda
6GB Quantum Bigfoot TX
13GB Quantum Fireball
20GB Western Digital WD200
40GB Western Digital WD400
HP CDRW

This is a very quick little machine under Windows 2000. I'm happy with it.

IBM Thinkpad 600e:
Pentium II 366Mhz (a full Pentium 2 with processor cycling, this isn't one of those crippled PII's)
224MB RAM
20GB IBM Travelstar HD
802.11b
100Mbps wired connection

This is my main machine, I take it to school with me and use it day-in and day-out. It's an incredible little machine, that just refuses to die. I'm having some issues with the screen, but for a machine well over 7 years old, that's not bad.

Cheers,

The Czar

OCed TiBook

My "most tricked out" "rig" would probably be my 667 DVI Powerbook. It's overclocked to 800mHz; 40gig 5400rpm Fujitsu hard drive with 8mb cache; 512mb RAM. I think the hard drive actually did more to make it faster than the overclock did, but it's noticeably zippier all around.

My other machines are also a little tricked:

Beige G3 desktop: 333mhz G3 overclocked to 350 (yeah, it can go much higher, but I like the even number); custom heat sinc; 512mb ram; blue power light; two 20gig hard drives. This one runs OS 9 and Yellowdog Linux 2.3, but doesn't really do much anymore.

Quadra 605: Full '040 chip; 32mb ram stick (36mb total); 1.2gig hard drive. System 7.5.3 and Debian on this one.

My first, and only, project w

My first, and only, project was a older PowerMac 9500/132
-upgraded the processor to a powerlogix G3/466
- replaced the stock drive with a 18 gig, 10,000 rpm Seagate Cheetah SCSI
- added another 9 gig SCSI
- 700 plus of ram (can't remeber??)
I had to cut out the hard drive wall to make room for a stick of taller UMax ram (I wish i had a dremel!)

ok

It's totally stable. Like I said though, it hasn't seemed to do what I was hoping it would. XBench testing still puts it right on the high side of the 667 range, not up with the 800s, even though Metronome and system profiler (OS 9) both list processor speed as 800mhz. I can't really figure out why, but I'm not blessed with tons of time to trouble-shoot it. If you have suggestions, I'm open to hearing them.

Hows about this?

* Compaq Presario Case
* Gateway ATX motherboard with Intel 430TX chipset, built-in ATI Mach64(?) video and Ensoniq ES1370 sound
* Originally a Pentium 166 upgraded to a Pentium 233mhz processor
* 192MB RAM
* Floppy
* 12X Octek IDE CD-ROM from the flea market
* Generic Realtek 8139 10/100 NIC
* 6GB Quantum Bigfoot hard disk pulled from an IBM Aptiva
* Creative Voodoo2 with 12MB RAM
* Windows 98 SE

I built this one primarily to play some of the older DOS and Windows games in my collection - at times my main PC is too fast to run them. I'm nearing the end of Tomb Raider I at the moment.

Disco Inferno:
Is that Compaq one of those whose memory maxes out at 40 MB? If so, I feel your pain.

I tricked out my rig with 2.6 ghz P4, 512 Ram, extra 40 G hard drive, DVD-ROM drive, Blue LED lights, laser printer, viewsonic 19" monitor, 128 mb NVidia GEForce Mx4000, altec lansing speakers (with huge sub); and (legal versions) of macromedia suite, SAW pro, vegas video, acid pro (with all of the additional clips), other sonic foundry programs, and alot more. I spent altogether probably $2500+.

Only reason I mentioned it....

--------------

A few years back my wife and I visited her grandmother. She had one of those Compaqs. While we were there, I thought I would upgrade the RAM on her machine - it only had 40MB. We went to Circuit City, bought a 128MB stick of RAM, and when I put it in the machine, it only saw 40MB. After looking up the model online, we returned the memory and I informed her about her machine.

I'm working on converting an old MacSE to a PC, just for the hell of it, and to irritate the heck outta my Macinsane friends...

I may occasionally post pics, as the project grows...

1.5 gigs of normal ram
A Zip 250 to transfer my savegame files from CPU to CPU
SOOO many games its scary.
Two 400gig hard drives
And its all connected to a 23 inch Cinema HD Display

Eh, listen tim tims...

CPU means Central Processing Unit so unless you are physically swapping the CPU (that would be your G4 processor) every time you play a game... unlikely... or somehow have McGivored a way to get a Zip 250 drive to talk directly to the processor bypassing motherboard, ram, OS, etc then you might want to start changing your lingo...

Just a thought Smile

Jules must be a n00b to the world of geekdom. Biggrin I call my tower a CPU, I don't say "I have a DVD burner that is connected to my motherboard in my chieftec case which is connected to my monitor that when you put CDs in it puts.....*blah blah blah*"

Lighten up...

my newest one.

well, maybe it may not be as cool as all of yours, but i am proud of it.

AMD Sempron 1.7GHz (clocked to 2.0GHz with 512K oc L2 cache on chip)
64MB Shared VRAM (*blech* it slows down performance using the main memory as vram. I need a new card)

PC Chips Motherboard: FSB 333MHz with 256 MB DDR-PC 2700DRAM.
USB 2.0 x 8 ports
DUAL Floppy's
LG DVD drive
Unkown CD-RW 40x12x48 Burner
Iomega Jaz 2GB on 20MB's SCSI
Adaptec SCSI 3 PCI Card.
Windows 2k (i dont like XP, Not my style)
Big Copper Heatsink on CPU (with Blue LED's)
80GB HD
40GB SCSI 3
10GB Backup HD IDE
Wireless LinkSys 11Mb's card
10/100/1000Mb Ethernet
Surround Sound system (great for those movies huh?)
sadly, Compaq 1024x768 Monitor (it sucks majorly)
133/MB's IDE Bus
SATA x 2
small fan on Chipset to keep from overheating

720 WATTS PSU BABY!!!

Mini-Tower 5 bays (2 floppy, 4 5.25")
9 HDD Bays under the main bays

With all this stuff, Mpeg 4 Encoding (with MY (i own them) DVD's )i get 49fps encoding from DVD to .avi)

This WAS supposed to be my work machine, but it has turned out so nice, that i use it for play too.

Thx guys for taking the time to post

Actually he's correct... CPU means "Central Processing Unit" and that means the computer's actual processor:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cpu

But some people call their computer the "CPU"... which makes sense in a way, as the CPU is the main part of a computer. Jules was just trying to make a smartass comment about your incorrect use of lingo, there wasn't really any need for all the "N00B" comments, as technically he is more correct than you... making you the N00B!
