LCIII ROMs

The HD was not recognized on my LCIII. The battery was dead so I replaced the battery and cleared the PRAM. That didn't do it so I
picked up an old 50pin seagate drive to try out. That isn't recognized either. I tried disk tools, drive setup - no SCSI drive found.
I pulled the ROMs off to reseat and then I noticed that the chips are 40pin, but the sockets are 42pin. What is the proper orientation
pin1:pin1 or pin1:pin2?

Figured it out. Pin1 on chip

Figured it out. Pin1 on chip goes to pin2 on socket.

Since I am still able to boot from floppy, I assume the ROMs are still good. I already made sure the drive voltages were OK. What else on the MB would cause the SCSI drive to not be recognized?

Are you getting a spin-up on

Are you getting a spin-up on the scsi drives? Any other clicking from the drive(s)?
If the drives are sticking, you can try popping them into another PSU, hang them off the side of your PC, etc., to see if they'll spin up, then try one again in the LC.

Any chance you could check voltage levels on the power supply?
There's not much of a power supply in the pizza-box Macs. Yours might not have the umph left to spin up an old sticking drive.

Or you might have two bad drives. I'm assuming that as you swapped drives before, you tried pulling the scsi and power cables out and popping them back in at both ends to make sure they're properly seated.

Are you trying to use Apple OEM'd drives (they have the Apple logo on the label), or generic SCSI ones? The version of Drive Setup that shipped with the Mac OS will only recognize and format Apple OEM drives. To use generic SCSI drives, you have to use either a 3rd party drive formatting program (like FWB Hard Disk Toolkit) or track down a copy of the "hacked" version of Drive Setup.

No problem with either drive

No problem with either drive spinning up, and the voltages are fine. Both the orig drive and the one I picked up make noises like the stepper is working. Ironically the replacement drive whines more noticeably than the orig. I have to believe it is something else.

I have pulled out and reseated the cables so many times I probably need to recheck continuity.

The first drive is original q

The first drive is original quantum. The replacement drive is seagate ST32550N. The seagate has some jumper options. It looks like I need to jumper for scsi termination and termination power. I didn't get any of those really small jumpers with the drive, so I'll have to wire-wrap. Is there any reason I need to set the scsi ID other than zero?

So when you say non-apple drives will not be found by the disk tool, that means "unable to locate a suitable drive on scsi port". If so I guess I'll need to find that hacked tool. Getting it onto a floppy is another matter. Hopefully there is a better PC util than what I used before.

Added the drive jumpers, and

Added the drive jumpers, and removed and washed the MB. Found the hacked disk setup and other utils here:

Now to get it onto a mac floppy from a PC...

Having a heck of a time using

Having a heck of a time using XP to put a mac disk image onto a 1.44 floppy. The utils that used to work under windows don't work on XP. GEM or Gemulator Explorer, is one that is supposed to xfer files PC to/from HFS and HFS images too. It worked well for me years ago, but it has not been updated for XP. It can read DOS format floppies, but hangs on HFS disks.

I did find one, rawritewin, that seemed to work to xfer an existing HFS image file on a PC to a pre-formatted 1.44 floppy, but in order to be useful I need to find an HFS floppy image of a boot disk that already has the hacked/patched version of drive setup. I have the util itself in .sit or .bin or .hqx whatever but that probably doesn't help since I can only reliably copy images, not files.

I just realized I have access to a macbook with OSX. I also have an accessory USB floppy drive that works on both mac and PC.

I used OSX to add the patched util to an exising mac classic boot floppy (1.44M). It didn't complain during the copy and the disk booted, but the folders were bad and the util could not be run.

I was able to use RawWrite fo

I was able to use RawWrite for windows to make a copy of my mac Disk Tools floppy disk and then use the Executor mac emulator to add different utilities to that floppy. Both tools work on XP.
Executor includes Stuffit 4 which works for the older archives. Under OSX I was using Stuffit 2010, and that may have been why I wasn't successful.

I used Executor to add the patched Apple HD SC Setup to the floppy.
The HD was still unrecognized. Then I tried Lido7 which also says it can't talk to the HD. I can hear the disk stepper every time I scan in Lido, so the SCSI bus is at least partly working. Lido reports some status bits but I don't know how to interpret them. The drive cable checks out, and I think termination is OK. What else?
