Problem reformatting Color Classic HD

Hi all,
I recently replaced my Color Classic Hard drive that died with another original 80 mb drive from a spare parts cc I had picked up some time ago. The drive is filled with stuff I have no use for so I decided to simply run Apple HD Setup and reformat the drive and do a clean install of 7.1. When I try and format the drive it fails...I get this message...cannot unmount drive due to an open file. Tried an install from the 7.1 disk and again the install fails.

Can anyone suggest how I can resolve this problem and do a clean install? Help would be very appreciated!

Turn off . . .

Hey,

This problem rings a distant bell. I have two suggestions. The first, is to make sure file sharing is turned off. The second -- more drastic, but more reliable -- is to start the CC with a boot disk and then remove the system folder from the CC and place it on the desktop. The CC should get a "?" on restart. Shouldn't be any problem wiping the hard drive since no files could be open.

boot disk

Thank you for the reply. I checked file sharing and it is turned off. I also booted up with the shift key depressed to disable extensions, but still get the file open error.

I did a quick internet search, but to be honest I don't know how to create or use a boot disk for a Mac. I am assuming it is similar to an IBM boot disk. This is what I get for spending all my formative years using apple II's and IBM's :)....any help on this topic appreciated.

Wait a minute . . .

Hey,

If you don't have a boot disk, how are you going about wiping the drive?

boot disk

Been around IBM to long! Realized that the tools disk was my boot disk...booted with it ran HD setup and reformatted the drive. Reloaded the 7.1 os and all is well.

Excuse my moment of stupidity and again thanks.

No problem . . .

Hey,

I've blown up enough Mac gear to know what a moment of stupidity is like. Glad all is well . . .

Excellent site that of yours (very off topic)

Hi William,

I klicked on your link and was rewarded with some excellent reading on movies. Good wordsmithing (as far as I as a native German can tell). Especially you ideas about BladeRunner are interesting. I read the book in English and watched the director's cut on DVD. One of my favorites is moon 44 because of the set design.

Are you writing for a living?

Hey . . .

Hey,

Thank you very much for checking out my site and appreciating it. That makes it all worthwhile. I have written for a living but am not at the moment. Working on a huge segment about serial killer movies that I hope will be done soon.

Thanks again.
