Hi...could use some help. I was trying to upgrade my mini G4 from a combo (mod CW-8123) to a super (UJ-845)drive...Coincidentally, a disk had gotton stuck in the combo just before I was going to do this...the first time in 2 years...just wonder if something may be related...Anyway I got the disk out and retried the combo drive and it works fine again...But I couldn't get the superdrive to work...In fact, the mini won't boot with it in..its as if it is trying to boot from the superdrive maybe....get the folder and ? not the apple (use OS 10.3.9)..I also tried a few other combo drives I had lying around (also 8123 and they do the same thing). Are all these dirves bad? or is there some master/slave setting (didn't know there were on these) that is causing trouble or something else...The superdrive was bought used but the guy said it worked fine/was tested...the other drives I'm going to check in my ibook to see if they work there..but any ideas appreciated..thanks, rick

Yes, there should be a little swich or jumper block somethere on the drive to select Master or Slave. Check the old combo drive to see what it was set to.
these drives are set internally through there firmware. there is no switch or jumper block.
please refer here for some one else having a problem...

and, more specifically... from the Mac Mini forums... discussing why you cannot use the uj-845 on the mini:
http://www.macminiforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265
however... as quoted from the mac mini foruns.... apareantley you can put a jumper on your minis internal hard drive to set it to slave instead of master, and then there will be no conflict and they should qork...
quote:
"well... i got it working w/out having to flash the drive and set it to slave..
what i did was set the HD to slave (the first time i did it, i had the jumper on the wrong pins)(stupid me, i found a generic notebook jumper guide online which was wrong compared the sticker on the drive)(oops)
after that, i stuck the burner in, which is set to master, plugged it all in, booted up, and voila.. it works... didn't have to mess around w/openfirmware or anything....
installed patchburn, and it now works great even w/the ilife apps (system profiler detects it as supported)"
by many reports... here is a list of firmware that should make your drive work if you wanted to flash it. (of course, to flash it you'd need a mini ide to regular ide adapter, and a PC to flash it with.

BTW: I make no warranty for the suitability of this firmware for anyones intended purpose, nor do I accept any liability if this firmware turns any ones drive into a brick. Also, I am not responsible for providing, creating, or modifying any of this firmware.
We should clear that to say that you cannot use a stock uj-845 on a mini. Mine came with one, but of course it was flashed to slave already...
