Okay, I have three 600e CD drives. Each device is terminated and set as #3. I am only hooking one at a time to a Quadra 950. The device is always recognized via SCSI Probe 5, but the volume will not mount. Volume is an Apple 8.5 CD (but no CD mounts anyways). Am I missing something?
I have rebooted and done a few other things, but cannot get anything to mount from any of these drives. I am unsure if the drives are bad, but doubt it. How can I troubleshoot these? (Never messed with 'em before).

Are the necessary CD extensions in the system's Extensions folder?
can't believe I forgot to check that one!
I will take a peak at that later tonight, since I will have to pull the extension from another computer on my network and it is not up right now.

and the CD's driver gets loaded from the CD, no need to have drivers in HD's system ƒ.

I have never used bootable external devices such as this, how do I do this? Tried holding down C key for boot, but got the sad mac.

but that only works when the bootable "C" drive is located at bus 0, ID 3. Now DDTM, you mention an OS8.5 CD, I just know yer not trying to boot your Q950 from that! No 68K Mac (including Quadras) can use OSes later than 8.1.
Another dandy way to force the Mac to boot from an alternate drive is to hold down the cmd-opt-shift-del keys. That tells the Mac to overlook the designated boot device and go to the next bootable device.
re: Startup with bootable CD in drive . . .
Note that I wasn't trying to describe how to boot from the CD drive, only how to load a driver so you can mount CDs using the CD drive once booted from your regular startup disk. whew, long screwy sentence!
hth,

it was a dumb question. Sure enough, I was using an 8.5 disk - first one I grabbed, not really thinking too much, first REAL legacy Mac. The CD is on bus 1, which explains the failing to boot to the CD with the "C" key.
The Command+Option+Shift+Delete worked. Once I install the driver, I have three of these bad boys I can daisy-chain together and another three I may be able to get.
