Re: THIS is Laughable!

The insanity is on Craiglist too. Often I find more sane prices there and can avoid shipping fees if I can find some local deals, but spotted this ad today...

Apple 2 Plus (excellent condition) - $1000
I have an original Apple 2 Plus in perfect aesthetic and working condition. This is the perfect Apple for the collector or the nostalgic.

Valuation: http://worthmonkey.com/#/apple%202
Comes with Disk DUO controller card, 16k Memory Expansion Card and 2 books:
* The New Apple II User's Guide, by David Finnigan (new condition)
* Microcomputer GRAPHICS, by Roy E. Myers (new condition)
Hard Drives and Monitor not included.
Will not ship, must pickup. Cash Only, $1000/obo.

Never seen the "worthmonkey" site before, but good name as it seems they have monkeys making up these values.
Of course if you search for "Apple II Plus", they don't have that listed so all old Apples must be created equal Smile
What a worthless tool for sellers looking for real info and also keeping potentially decent systems out of reach of those that want them and know what to do with them.

This guy is in the LA area, right? I saw this one and laughed out loud...I wish they were ALL "rare" and worth $1,000 (just like all of the eBay descriptions that start out with "rare" when the item is fairly common). Good stuff!

Good Evening All,

Well...

Let's start with this Keyboard:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121668248619?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Is it real, or from another 8-bit computer?

Then there is this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231581680917?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The ZipGSX. The right price, or a bit much?

And finally the "Deal of the Day":

http://www.ebay.com/itm/271889987599?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I would love to know if all of these are ROM 3 Units. lol

Yup, that's the guy. Was tempted to answer his add and offer him like $150, just to see how he'd react Smile

Is it real, or from another 8-bit computer?

Looks like an Asian clone keyboard, and is about 10x overpriced.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231581680917?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The ZipGSX. The right price, or a bit much?

I think the last one went for 450 bucks, so it's in the ball park.

And finally the "Deal of the Day":

Steven :)

Looks like school salvage special; probably all base units w/256k ramcard. Assuming that being the case, it's starting price is about 1k too much, IMO.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

New Items for today:

Apple II Plus:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mint-Condition-WorkingVtg-1982-Apple-II-Plus-Computer-Disk-II-Drive-AppleMonitor-/171817838527?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item28012427bf

(only wants 4 times what it is worth)

A IIe:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-II-E-computer-model-2S2128-with-monitor-and-floppy-drive-1980s-/121669790271?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c5415aa3f

(surely you jest)

A Mac Classic:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Macintosh-Mac-Apple-Computer-Classic-with-Image-Writer-II-/331573776772?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d33565184

(I will give that they do say "or best offer")

This Apple II Plus is back:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Apple-II-Plus-Computer-Model-A2S1048A-with-Videx-Enhancer-II-Keyboard-/281710160540?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41973bea9c

(Still too high)

A Mac SE:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-Apple-Computer-Printer-/251986894190?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aab96dd6e

(Way too high)

A G4 Cube:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-Collectors-PowerMac-G4-Cube-original-box-manuals-CDs-great-condition-/311376654976?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item487f7eb280

(Now THIS ONE is interesting)

A II Plus and two IIe's:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-Three-Apple-II-Computers-/121671395680?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c542e2960

(The starting price is right, but the condition is not that good)

Another IIe:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-IIe-A2S2064-Computer-Workstation-w-Motherboard-Super-Serial-II-I-O-Co-/131530938250?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e9fdad78a

(This seller is consistently jacking up their prices)

That should be enough for today.
There are more, but I don't want to place them all up here at once. lol

One thing about it though, it is not getting any better out there.
I never expected it to, but one can hope.

Why buy a complete II Plus when you can get just the case for the same price?

Then we have a $500.00 IIe:

And the piece to resist ants (that's French you know, lol):
An Apple II Plus that must be made of Gold or Platinum:

Yes, yes, yes ... but still:

It is not the ever increasing number of utterly (insanely?) overpriced auctions that worries me, but the seemingly even more increasing number of people who are willing to shell out 160, 170 or even more dollars/euros for a totally unremarkable IIe.

These days, it seems to be impossible to buy such a machine for a decent price - let's say for less than $100.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

theart02,

I cannot say you are wrong.

99.999 percent of folks do not realize that
a IIe was the most plentiful of the II line
and can be had (in good condition) for between $30.00 and $50.00.

The Sellers know this (at least some of them do)
and prey upon the unsuspecting person who
wants to get into retro-computing at any cost.

This (sadly) can also be said about the IIc
and some sellers thereof.

Hello Mark,

do you really expect that girl to be able reading the label at the bottomside of the computer ?
this auction just reminds me to the joke:
"What do you need to make the eyes of a blond girl glow ?"
"switch on a battery tourch upfront of the left or right ear ?"

that girl faces 2 problems....
first the title of the offer at ebay can´t be altered / corrected
second it´s a offense against ebay rules because what she offers in text and title isn´t what is in the pictures...
so girlie will have to shut down offer and toss in a new corrected one....
do you believe she would adjust the price or screw it up ?
questions, questions, questions ...... and no answers..... sigh
LOL

You can edit the title of an auction. There are times where you cannot, which changes from time to time. (Used to be after you sold something if multiple quantities, or after a bid, but I believe now it's only after a bid or have a best offer pending)

it seems that eBay is having problems this evening.

Ebay is having all kinds of issues for me today as well...

Hello Steven,

do you remember 2 years ago, when first mainboards have been offered as framed art ?
I just told you in that days that it´s just a question of time till that bad habit
will be performed with Interfacecards too.....
now two years later it turns out to become true.....
another 3 or 4 years and you´ll see the first Apple II cards in that condition too.....
Just turns on the tune "Hit the road Jack" in my head....

Inflation guys, it's inflation! We must consider that, and the original cost of the hardware back in the day. Then the storage fees, ebay fees, paypal fees, shipping, and with luck - some presale testing and cleaning.

So a $3,000 Apple II+ isn't all that bad when you consider.. And a II+ under $500 is an absolute steal!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

This has been an amusing thread to browse through! There are some real side-splitters out there (especially those framed peripherals).

Although, I think it's worth considering the possibiltity that some of these prices are becoming quite reasonable. Despite the proliferation of early Apple computers, there's no doubt that these machines are starting to become rarer (and the sellers know it).

Just look at the Apple I that was thrown in the trash the other day - imagine how many II units are being dumped like this every day. Grandma and Grandpa don't give two hoots about eBay, they would rather dump their 'useless' system in the trash.

Many Apple IIs were in schools (according to the lore), and it's unlikely that most of these machines escaped the dumpster. Even here in Australia, I distinctly remember dumping Apple //e computers and monitors into the skip bins, circia 1998. Similar to the above example, schools had no reason to give these systems away or try to sell them.

Today, I can potentially see many II units being dumped due to problems with age, whether it's burst capacitors or popped chips. The overwhelming majority of people who have an Apple II in storage would have no idea how easy these things are to fix, nor are they all that interested. So in the trash they go.

The ones that do understand the significance (hey, is that the same Apple that makes iPhone? Wow!) think they have something incredibly special on their hands. All the press about Apple I auctions doesn't help either.

In short - it's my opinion that the estimated numbers of II computers 'in the wild' has been overestimated by the enthusiasts, and underestimated by the eBay seller.

Being from Australia, it's actually quite frustrating to see some of the prices that pop up in the USA. Even cheap units and peripherals end up being +$100 after shipping costs, and you're putting a lot of faith in the postal workers to treat with care. When searching locally, I have never -ever- seen an Apple computer for less than $100, working or not. I bought mine non-working for $200 and did the repairs myself - this is about right for Australia.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Speedy, Georgel, CWJ, and All,

I'll start with this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/400941250828?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

This one is back up for auction again, having not sold the last time.

Of course, again I wrote the seller and asked him why he didn't just
turn the unit over and remove the pan so he could put a Power Supply in it.

He replied that he finally got the idea and was going to do exactly that.
It only took twice.

Speedy:

Yup! We sure did. LOL

Georgel:

Yes. A Printer Card should not be over $30.00 (in my opinion).

CWJ:

Well...
The Original Apple II units are getting scarce.
The prices are going up and I can understand that.
The II Plus units are now averaging between $100.00 and $150.00.
(depending on condition, some are higher)
The Bell and Howell(Darth Vader) is a good example.
That is an increase of about 60 percent in the last five years.
Of course there are plenty of them, but you are right.
The ones that bother me are the IIe, IIgs, and the IIc.
They are plentiful and folks are asking outrageous prices for them.

Three years ago you could buy a IIe for less than $30.00, a IIgs
for less than $40.00, and a IIc for less than $15.00.

The sellers think that they have hit the Motherload.

A prime example of this is KenB.
He sells IIc units and Peripheral Cards.
I am sure that you have seen what he wants for them.
Granted; he cleans them up and tests them.
He even adds extras with his units.

It is also a fact that there are less of us users and
collectors for them to sell to.
I think that they have not taken that into consideration.
And believe it or not, we are a really picky bunch. lol

Being that I'm "Old School", I would rather buy a unit
and clean it myself. It has worked fine for me and others
for a very long time.

In the long run it boils down to Common Sense.

I'm surprised that these don't sell well, or at all. The Apple Graphics Tablet. And even more surprised that they don't move unless they're around 75 or so. To a 6 year old kid (me) back in the day THIS was one of the holy grails of computing! I don't recall how much they cost back then, anyone know?

Why would the Liron card be more valuable as opposed to the SuperDrive card? The Liron only works with the UniDisk 3.5, whereas SuperDrive works with 3 types - UniDisk 3.5, FDHD, and Apple 3.5 drives.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Maybe because lots of people have heard of the Liron card and know they want it (driving up the price) whereas a lot fewer people know what the SuperDrive card is (especially when it is listed by its official Apple name of "Apple II 3.5" Disk Controller Card")?

That said, lately Liron cards are under $100, while SuperDrive Cards seem to be going for between $300 and $400.

$300!! WTF?

That is so ironic and backward. HA! I couldn't get rid of 5 SuperDrive cards just maybe a few years ago. Not even for $50-$60 bucks each. And even then that is still on the high side. Every potential buyer asked if I had the Liron instead. Interest in SuperDrive controller was nil.

I wonder how high that will go?

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Keatah, Wernst, Speedy, and All,

1. Liron vs Superdrive Card:

The fact that the Liron Card is more available than the Superdrive Card is one reason
that folks are going for the Liron Card. The other reason is the fact that
a Superdrive is Extremely Hard to come by.

There is no sense in spending money on a Superdrive Card if you don't have a Superdrive.
The Liron is a cheaper way to go.

2. This Apple II is NOT LAUGHABLE:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201377477144?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I could be wrong though.

Is it a II?
Is it a II Plus?
Is it a Bell and Howell? (I always thought that all B&H units were II Plus's.)

It has an A2S1048B Model Number
It has an A2S3001169 Serial Number (B&H)
It shows all the indicators of being a B&H
It has an Original Keyboard
The Motherboard has 16k Blocks
The Serial Number is so low that it boggles the imagination.
It does not look like it came with a Language Card in Slot 0

Is it a Hybrid?
Is it a Prototype B&H?

I am not sure, but it is going to stay on my Watch List until the listing ends.

This unit has really caught my attention.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Steven,

to me it looks rather more like a "Frankenstein" Apple
with B&H case and keyboard but inside a Rev.1 or Rev.2 mainboard.
To become a real B&H it should have the rear extensions like
"normal B&H" and the extensions to the cards used in a B&H.
Seems to me somebody took two different damaged Apple Units and joined one working unit
from the parts.... even the powersupply seems to be from another unit...
three dead bodies to join a working body ? even missing lid ?

I never tried it but but maybe the Liron card is providing smartport capability and thus it is able to drive some larger storage, e.g. HDD emulators and old "intelligent" hard drives? Is that correct?
OFF: I'm looking to buy a damaged superdrive card for possible cloning...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I have yet to get into the intricacies of both cards. But the SuperDrive controller has a 6502 on board. I would think this has the most capability and would likely provide SmartPort compatibility - whatever that means.

Ohh.. the Liron has the IWM with smartport.. My mistake.. IT's way too late to be doing this sort of thing now.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

The Superdrive card is way too expensive. The Liron card is easier to get.

If you have a Unidisk 3.5 then your choices are limited because you need a Liron card, a iigs or a Superdrive card.

The Laser card and the Unidisk 3.5 connected together spells disaster as I have heard they will destroy each other.

And the FDHD is actually easier to get (except the case) because all you need is a drive mechanism from an early mac and install it inside a Apple 3.5 drive case.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

insanitor,

I have a Superdrive Controller Card and a Superdrive.
These were bought together several years ago and,
yes, it was expensive, but well worth it at the time.

The thing about it is that both the Card and the Drive
are hard to find. They really do not come up for
auction very often either as separate units or together as a package.

I know that several Superdrives have come up this year on ebay
and so have several Controller Cards and the prices are outrageous (IMO).

Here's the thing...
If you have the SuperDrive Controller Card you can use any 3.5 Drive
that Apple has out there.
If you have a Liron Controller Card and a SuperDrive, the Controller Card
treats the SuperDrive as if it were an 800k 3.5 inch Drive, so you do not
get the full functionality of the drive.

The Motherboard Date looks like 7938, so an Early Apple ][ + Board, since it seems to have the Apple ][+ ROMS.

The first Bell and Howells produced were developer machines sent to B&H employees and contractors. Bell and Howell wasn't just going to get into the Apple II distribution game, they had BIG plans to sell educational software and hardware, AV controllers and numerous other computer related products.

Before they could do much of that, the Apple II market exploded in popularity. The educational software market got crowded fast, and Apple didn't need Bell and Howell anymore to get into schools.

The developer machines usually have serial #s that are 4 digits. The school-bound B&Hs mostly have serials in the 20-35K range.

The first B&H I acquired was an early one, and it had Integer ROMs on board, Applesoft on card.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I recall seeing my first B&H sometime in my early grade school years. And I thought ohh my gosh! They are illegally copying the Apple II design! I was angry and all that. Does Apple know about this? I wrote Apple telling them about this counterfeit.

Some number of weeks later they wrote me back, sent me a B&H brochure and some of those Apple stickers you see on fleabay for $10.00. Along with a brief explanation it was a licensed product and that it was designed just for us kids in school.

This was at a time when I was big into pestering companies and writing letters to NASA asking them to put lasers on the Space Shuttle like the X-Wing had. I loved getting the responses in the mail, what kid doesn't like getting mail? And all the goodies like things from the GPO.

That's what makes the Apple II special to me and some of my buddies, all the good times we had with it.

AFAIK the SuperDrive cannot work with Liron card. The only 3.5" drive that works with Liron card is the Unidisk 3.5" A2M2053, e.g. the one that has a 6502 CPU onboard capable of buffering the data stream.

The card buffers the data, not the drive.
