It's often a much maligned time for design, but I think it was also an era of technical innovation and interesting vehicles. What noteworthy rides can you think of from that time?

Just to be technical correct:
that motor was invented by a man named Felix Wankel and the motor was named after him as Wankelmotor....
and NSU AUDI ( that was before the company became only AUDI ) was the company that brought up this motor first in a series car as Ro80.....
and another ( but similar ) story from history of motorcycles:
in the same time in Germany a engineer ( Mr. Friedel Münch ) took a car motor from the NSU Prinz 1000 ( with little more than 1000 ccm and mounted it in a motorcycleframe and sold that as Münch Mammut motorcycle ... that was a legendary machine... later machines with 1200 ccm and 1300 ccm were built
Triumph tried to attempt the same thing and mounted the motor from the Triumph Spitfire ( 1300 ccm ) in a motorcycleframe but only a prototype series of 10 motorcycles was built... they didn´t dare to build that motorcycle with the argument: too much power, too heavy to handle ( more than 470 Kgs ) ....
if others would have trusted in this arguments the BOSS HOSS would have never been built.....
I've always sort of liked the '76 Cobra II. There were a lot of reasons why it wasn't a 'good' car (sold well, though). I don't think it was particularly innovating, either. I think it looked nice. It had a nice sporty look to it.
The most noteworthy ride of the 1970's is the Lamborghini Countach
Introduced in the early 1970's
I've always been fond of the Bricklin, despite all of its shortcomings. There's at least one on the road locally that I see every now and then.

There can be only one...
The Morgan
Okay, as someone who likes small cars and motorcycles, the Morgan three-wheeler is undoubtedly one of the desirable vehicles I've ever seen.
Thank you, Steven, I've found my dream car.

Hello Sreven,
if you are fan of the sound of the motor in your car you probably have never seen this:
http://www.myvideo.de/watch/5280496/Brutus_47000ccm_Motor
and text at wiki is here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brutus_%28Experimentalfahrzeug%29
....
i´m sorry that the text seems not to be availiable with english language -
but just two facts:
a BMW aeroplane motor with 47000 ccm (!)
in a carframe.... and the result was called BRUTUS ....
avarage need of fuel 1 liter per km.... but it would be a timeeating task to get such a car on the road....
anyhow it´s realy awesome !
anyhow.... if i would have the free choice ... mine would be this Duesenberg:
http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/08/a-good-drive-spoiled/
driving a car like this isn´t the pure sound... but its a statement !
and a affordable car of the 70´s ? well then it would be the ´68 stingray....
or alternate: having a free "pass to enter and drive card" at Jay Leno´s car collection....

but i fear that sitting in front of those cars - i would loose confidence in my ability to make a choice....
and for a ride on the german autobahn in area without speedlimit:

the Bugatti Veyron or the Koenigsegg !
sincerely speedyG
Speedy,
The BRUTUS is bad-ass! LOL
eeun,
The Morgan three wheeler has been my favorite for many years.
It does not hurt that it's my last name either.
The '70s Firebirds had a lot of style, but the '6os cars had a lot of horsepower. It's a tough decision.
Firechicken
Unfortunately, the 70s Firebird/Trans-Am will always remind me of Smokey and the Bandit, which is not a good thing.
Smokey & The Bandit...A true classic...How could you not like that movie?
Heres my own piece of the 70's... 1976 to be exact. This photo was taken in 2005, when it was still tidy... its in my garage at the moment with no sills, left hand step, and have the winscreen pillar missing as im halfway through cutting out a motherload of rust...
1973 - 1974 Lancia Stratos
They only just stopped making those VW Microbuses in Brazil. VW Brazil would have made more but they have a new law there where new vehicles have to have two airbags and ABS to be legal for sale. They had been making them there since 1956, and since 2005 only in water cooled form!
Does yours have the 2 liter L-jetronic motor? Kewl ride. (^-^)
And I-spy-with-my-little-eye a BMW e28 parked behind the Bus; I know it's not from the '70's, but that's my all time favorite. And technically, since it hit the market in the early '80's it was designed in the '70's. Plus it shares a lot in common with its predecessor, the e12 5-series, which is a true '70's car.
I drooled over those machines when they were new but could never afford them, so pretty much put them out of my head. Then a few years ago I stumbled across ads for several '80's BMWs and they were actually affordable; I paid $800 for a rust-free example that was in serious need of help five years ago, and have been tinkering with it ever since. They truly are great cars!
I liked that first one so much I bought another '80's BMW, an '88 735i. This is one of the rarer beasts, as it came with a factory 5-speed manual transmission. It's a little strange having to manually shift gears in a car that big, but it's such a great driving car... I drive it pretty much daily to work and back and it's only failed me once (and that was my own fault.)
As a previous VW Bus owner, all I can say is "of course you are!"
I didn't realize the right-hand-drive versions had the sliding door on the left. That would seriously mess with my mind
Boooootiful. My father always used to day that the ones with the bar down the front window were only 'real' ones, like here. hahah. Not sure if I agree with him or not ...
Gm just did the same crap and spent millions with a special team to study tesla motors.
On the subject of mini muscle there was the Plymouth Duster 340, Chevy Nova SS 350 and this Hornet. All designed to get around soaring insurance premiums.
SC 360 Hornet
The Porsche 928 was one of the most futuristic cars of its era, finishing in 1995 with 350 hp and 170 mph. The downfall was that it did look a little like a squashed Pacer with Lamborghini Miura headlamps, lol.
