Hey,
I tried googling but didn't find much. I used to have a copy of PS 1.0 and as I remember all it needed was sys 7.0 or higher. Since it ran on my SE, it required less than 4MB for the app and the system. Can't you run that app off the floppy? This is from memory so it ain't carved in stone.

idk about the other versions, but I ran 1.0 (might have been 1.07) on my Classic I. It ran fine. This was with System 7.5.5 and 4mb of RAM. YMMV.

Ha anyone run 1.07 with less then 4 mb of ram and 8mhz?
Hey,
There isn't a Mac that ran at less than 8 MHz. What do you propose, an accelerator degrade? Or something like that?

Mac XL (a relabeled Lisa) ran at a blistering 5MHz.
Hey,
You said:
"Mac XL (a relabeled Lisa) ran at a blistering 5MHz."
Well, technically correct but utterly irrelevant. The XL didn't have an OS that would run Mac software and especially Photoshop 1.0 so who cares what MHz it ran at in terms of this conversation.

No, utterly relevant, if a bit pedantic. The Mac XL is a relabeled Lisa-- with Macworks software. The first disc loads an emulator with a Macintosh ROM, and the second disc loads Macintosh System 5. Other versions of this Macworks software exist, and it may be possible to run up to System 7.5.5 on the XL, albeit with a 720x364 display with rectangular pixels, or an awkward 608x431 with a square pixels mod.
As for the original question, I believe the Macintosh Plus is the bare minimum required to run Photoshop, and it probably has no routines to check for an 8MHz CPU because it really isn't that important.
Hey,
So you're saying . . . what? "May be" and "awkward" and "I believe the Macintosh Plus"? Huh? What's the point of all of this? Is this just spiffle tech or does it address the OP's question?

cwsmith said the Mac XL ran at 5MHz, you said there is no such Macintosh, and I corrected you and tried to be informative about the XL. Ultimately, it's all trivial rambling, but honestly so is wanting to know the system requirements for Photoshop 1.0, wouldn't you agree?
If it makes you more comfortable, I firmly declare right now that Photoshop 1.0 will absolutely and categorically refuse to run on the Macintosh 128 and Macintosh 512. It requires 2MB of RAM. 2.0 increased that requirement to 4MB. 0.63 probably required 2MB as well, especially if you take in consideration the overhead of debug code.
Okay cool thanks guys, didnt know that the slowest mac that could run other software was 8Mhz. So Does photoshop 2 require a mac plus as well?
It seems a pointless to be referencing minimum system requirements for Photoshop without color monitor being near top of the list.
The Mac II would then be what I'd consider the oldest Mac than can run it.
It's the purpose of the software as much as the hardware needs you should be considering, and compact Macs like the Plus can't even do greyscale.
Hey,
Did Photoshop 1.0 even handle color? I remember playing with it on an SE/30 I guess and of course that was B&W but I did have a color monitor attached at some point but I can't remember using PS 1.0 on it. Anybody remember?
William

Yep, it handled color.
I found some handy photos of 1.0 here.
I didn't start using Photoshop until version 2.5, and even then it had matured considerably over the first release.
. . . Photoshop 3. One word: layers.
Yikes!

Okay you guys have confused me now, was a mac plus the minimum requirement for ps 1.0
. . . but it needs to be running system 7.x.x. Or at least I think so. Anybody know if PS 1.0 would run in system 6?

from original Adobe PS 1.0.7 manuals:
• Macintosh SE, SE/30, II, IIx, IIci, IIcx with a minimum of 2 megabaytes of RAM
• System software 6.0.3
For Adobe PS 2.5:
• An Apple Macintosh II computer with a 68020 (or any later model) with a minimum 3 MB of RAM.
• System software 6.0.7
• 32-bit QuickDraw
Adobe recommends a Macintosh II with 68030 or 68040 processor, System 7 or higher and from 5 to 8 MB RAM.
are you satisfied?
