Looking at the Zune, I think it's a really pathetic attempt to rip off the iPod. Anyone else think so? The only thing I wish the iPod had was the built in FM Tuner, to either broadcast to a car or receive normal radio.

I don't really like the Zune, it just seems weird, and yes, somewhat like an iPod ripoff.I think the FM tuner is handy, but radio stations around here just play garbage, well, not NPR, but they have podcasts.
I do think that wireless music share thing is pretty slick, but the "3 days or 3 plays" is a TOTAL turnoff for me. I'll be sticking with my nano.
I can see it now... Viruses for Zunes through the 802.11!

Seems like a rough start for it. Lots of posts about crashes, lock-ups, excessive DRM (with its own set of problems) and what's with that weird hentai-ish installation error screen? That's just disturbing.

I find it hard to believe that M$ would want to make ANYTHING easy for anyone. I see that it seems to make a DRM for non-DRM music (i.e. people with their own music/podcast/ripped music from the store) That would be annoying as all get out. M$ seems to cripple everything and make it an inconvenience for everyone within a 10 mile radius.
I seem to remember a post about Intel's DRM hardware for the Pentium, that would dictate what would run on the system (such as hardware manufacturers like dell, can keep people from buying a machine and running Linux)
I think people will get sick of the Zune and it will flop.
I played with it today. I thought the wheel thing was actually a wheel at first.. that didn't do anything. I got used to clicking buttons again, and I was a little disappointed that I couldn't use the directional pad to move back and forward through the menus-- you have to use a seperate button for that. I didn't even use the button to the right of the directional pad.
The UI transition effects were, comically enough, jagged.
It's an effort... but it will take more than a Toshiba Gigabeat with wifi and a new firmware to dent the iPod's market share.

I believe I have that archived someplace on one of my disks... Probably will show it to my brother's kids one day as it will show them how bad software can get...

Intel != Microsoft. They're both members of the Trusted Computing Group, but that's about it. As I understand it, a TPM chip cannot prevent you from running another OS.

A TPM is not necessarily a software lockout chip. The Intel design can have those features. Those are very desirable when you are a corporate technician working on a mass of machines that should all be running identical software. How many support nightmares in a corporate environment can be avoided if one can stop users from installing what ever they want, and also stop viruses and spy ware from stealing company data?
For the general home user who wants control of their PC, TMP with software lockout is a bad, bad, idea. Except maybe for the kids computer... Nobody says you have to buy a PC with a TPM in it. There are millions of PCs out right now that will work for a long time, even if all makers started using TPM in all new machines. Given enough users who don't want TPM, and others who bought into it but get burned by it, they'd likely make some without. There would be a quick cottage industry of TPM-less machines from lesser makers if the big OEMs went TPM only and started locking out OSs.
