It's multi-coloured because the logo was to promote the Apple II's colour capabilities.
cool, thanks. Does that mean that the Apple 1 had a single colour apple badge?

The original Apple logo was a fairly detailed drawing of Newton sitting under an Apple tree. The logo was designed to look like a scroll.
I don't recall exactly when Apple changed to the rainbow fruit logo, but I would venture to say that the Apple I used the Newton scroll logo.

Remember the Apple I was just an elaborate printed-circuit board, not a stylish computer system with prominent logos and the like.
And of course we all know the corny lines that could go with the "byte" out of the current logo...("More byte for your buck" etcetera)
