Hi,
I have an iBook G3 500 Mhz (Dual USB), which previously contained a plain tray load cd-rom as standard. I recently purchased a slot load combo drive and I have now installed it, however my iBook does not recognise it. When I boot it seems power is getting to the combo drive as it makes startup-sounding noises. Then when I put a CD or a DVD into it, it sucks it in and seems to try to read it, however it never shows up in Finder. System profiler does not show the drive as existing.
My current theory is that i need a different cable to run the combo drive... has anybody else had any experience in performing this upgrade... i am really stuck...

just a thought. maybe the newer slot slot drivers are not compatiable with the older try load ibooks. i dont know??
ok, as im not really sure, maybe i shouldnt even be posting a reply...
that being said...
as far as i know they are just standard laptop drives... if there was an adapter on the old one, im sure it would've transfered over to the new one just fine... as far as being recognized, im pretty sure that it should be recognized natively by the OS... (you may have to use Patchburn to get burning supported in iApps) is it an Apple branded drive you used?
i dont have any experience with the ibooks, but i do have an old rev D. 333Mhz iMac that has a tray load drive, when i went to install tiger on it i just pulled the DVD Superdrive out of my mac mini, and switched over the different adapter plates that were on both drives, and it booted up and was recognized and supported fully by my iMac...
again.. off topic, so, i digress....
i would definetley check my connections again and the master/slave position on the drive. if it is an apple drive it should be plug and play as far as i know, unless one of the cables got jostled or a pin on one of the connectors got bent....
(Edited for spelling)
again, maybe not helpful, but here is a link to a guide on fastmac that shows how to install their upgrade drive into a Titanium powerbook (not sure how many similarities to your machine there are) but it may be helpful to look at... did yours have a flexcable? its been my experience that those kind of cables can be a pain in the but to get seated properly sometimes.

Hello, I'm an Apple Authorized tech, I was authorized in 1992, and have been doing it ever since. I have a pretty thorough knowledge of Apple hardware/Software, especially on the older macs. Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have, especially if you are trying to fix an old mac, or just set one up. I love the older Macs (the new ones are pretty good too =), and I know it is easier to find answers for the newer Apple stuff.
As far as installing the CD-ROM, as the above poster brushed on; the master/slave setting is probably what is keeping the drive from working (provided you know the drive is good). The G3 iBook only has one ATA bus, the HD is set to Master, and the optical drives are set as slave from the factory, MOST of the slot-load drives are set to Master, as most of the machines they go in use a dual ATA bus (HD Master on Bus 0, and Optical drive Master on Bus 1; i.e. the Powerbook G4s, Mac Minis, ect...). On some drives there is a small master/slave switch that you can use, on others it is a bit more involved, if you post the make/model of the drive I can let you know how to change it if it does not have a switch.
Also, the same goes for using optical drives from the iBooks on other Macs. In my old pismo I have a combo drive from an iBook that I had to set to master. Set as slave (iBook default) it will always hang up a Pismo coming out of sleep if a CD/DVD is present in the drive. Once set to master, works wonderfully =). The opposite is usually not true when you attempt to install a optical drive set to Master as a slave on the bus, it will do what your drive is doing; not show up in the System Profiler, makes the right noises upon being delivered power, takes dics but doesn't mount, ect...
Hopefully, you have a Master/Slave switch, which would only take 15 minutes or so to correct, and you can be up & running =). Have a good weekend, let me know if I can help with the Master/Slave setting if you don't have a switch.
Hmmm... yes the master/slave idea might be worth a try. There are no visible switches on exterior of the drive. It is labeled as an Apple, however the manufacturer in the fine print is Matsushita. Under the barcode there are the following numbers: COMBO8123A, 678-0483A, *PA3421H8EQ0GA*, and MODEL CW-8123-C.
Thanks,
Kim
Hi,
I'm having exactly the same prob with a combo drive I've installed into a G3 ibook 700mhz.
the drive is a Matsushita CW-8123 and there is no master/slave/CS switch on it. any ideas on how I'd go about forcing it into slave mode?
thanks
Tom

Hi!
I have the same problem. I'm trying to upgrade a G3 350 slot loading iMac with the CW-8123-C drive. I am using a slim to ATA adapter (PA-CD1), there are some pins to solder, but I've no information about the pinning.
What I've tried till now:
- OSX DVD boots, if the combo drive is the only one
- OSX boots from harddisk, when both drives are plugged in, but the combo does not show up in system profiler.
- combo drive does also not work with the original slim-ide adapter

The easiest way is to make the hard disk slave and leave the dvd master.
This works on my ibook dual usb G3 600mhz.
I also bought a CW-8123-C combo drive to replace the tray-loading cd drive in my 700mhz G3 iBook. Except mine won't even start the OS it says something about the memory, firmware, and the date and then says "type 'mac-boot'" to continue boot up or type 'shut-down' to shut doen. Its freeking me out and I don't know what to do. is it a master slave thing like alot of people have been saying? I hope my computer's not messed up.
Your getting dumped into open firmware which could be caused by a hardware error.
Maybe you havn't put things back together properly.
The MATSHITACD-RW CW-8123 from linux dmesg logs indicates that it is a slave on the Mac Mini and a master on the G4 ibook powerbook.
iBook G4
hdc: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8123
Mac Mini
hdb: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8123
hdc is master on the ide 2nd bus.
hdb is slave on the ide 1st bus.
I just got an Apple combo drive (CW-8123-C) and I'm hoping to put it in an iBook G3 700mhz. I know it doesn't have a master/slave switch, but I was hoping to set the HDD as slave for the time being. How would I do that? I noticed the apple HDD cable covers two of the jumper pins in a way the HDD doesn't have listed as a setting. the HDD is a FUJITSU MHV2060AH.
The jumper settings go like this:
* * Master
* *
* [] Slave
* []
* *
— Cable Select
[] * The Apple setting
[] *
Thanks for any help you guys can give.
What happens with the hard drive jumpered per fujitsu as the slave? Did it not boot? I've worked with a laptop style drive once before, and the particular one I had (NEC dvd burner slot loader) was permanently configured as the master. I put it on the IDE chain with my hard drive as the slave, and it worked without issue.
I wish I could help you with Apple's setting. Maybe a single drive config? (probably not )

I am fixing a few issues on a couple of g3's, both 500Mhz dual usb. One has a defective cd-rom so I thought I could swap each of them with a combo drive (slot-load ones) that I was given a while back as parts. I installed, nothing happened, the drive isn't seen. Then I asked around, found this article as an example, but the CW-8123-C has no external way of making it a slave. As I understand it a way around this is to clip the last column off the HD connector cable, attach a slave pin to the last column of the HD and thus the HD is now slave. So I did that, and still nothing has changed. In fact it's worse as the bootup only shows a flashing "?" -- if I firewire boot I get full access. If I hit option and go to the HD it does nothing.
Any ideas what else I can do ?
