Send it in to Apple, that looks like a backlight problem.
i dont really have $300 to have them replace my screen. It's not a brand new powerbook. its a 1ghz dvi model.
Current eBay price (for 1024x768 TFTs) is roughly $80-$120, they're used in many laptops including 12" iBooks.
Live with it? Current cost - roughly $0.
I've been meaning to look into this phenom, it looks like places where the backlight isn't evenly illuminating. Or something . . . :?
Apple did recall one model's display, though IIRC not your's.

It was either the Titanium 15.2" DVI or the first 15" AlBooks that were recalled. Nasty problem that- if you go directly to Apple for a replacement screen, you won't be looking at US$300... more like $600-800.
I'd recommend for you to give Apple's customer service line a call and explain your preedicament. With a convincing enough argument, they may give you a CS code. (has seen CS codes given for slot load iMacs (1999 vintage) that the owners couldn't grasp the concept of updating firmware before installing X, as well as clamshell iBooks - all within the last 12 months)
