I was given the parts need by a person to put together a Mystic for him. When I put in the board with the '040 proccessor it gives me a bus error on boot. I know that some modification needs to be done, because I was also given a copy of ResEdit and told "Your going to need this," but IU have found conflicting rerports on what the mod. is.

Does the p-ram battery on the mother board need replacing?
Have you checked out this page:

ResEdit?? Forgive me if I am incorrect here, but ResEdit is an application and needs an active System Folder to function. I fail to see what on earth ResEdit has to do with your problem, or why you have been told "Your going to need this", at this stage.
Can you start up from a floppy with a System folder on it? If so, boot up with it in the Mystic and at the same time, hold down the Apple-option-shift-delete keys and see if that helps. This will also work if you can somehow connect to an external HD. assuming of course, that your PRAM battery is valid.
Once your up and running, then you can then duplicate your System file and do all the surgery you like, using ResEdit.
I hope this is of some help to you.
I think you're being a little harsh on the OP. ResEdit can be used to avoid all soldering with a Mystic, as this page explains:
http://www.colourclassicfaq.com/mobo/mystic.shtml#Q2.1.3
But, you can't boot a Mystic on which you've neither done one of the hardware mods nor the ResEdit hack. So, as the above-mentioned page implies, the ResEdit hack is better done on another Mac.
Personally, I go either for a 640 x 480 hack or the 'resistor on the l/b' hardware hacks.

I did it on the same mac by booting from a System 7.5 tools disk! Then I ran Resedit, worked great. Make a copy of the file on the HD incase you mess it up.
