Java-curious

Ok,
I am interested in learning Java. I am pretty solid in VB and am expert in COBOL and JCL. What I want to know is the name of a good (and cheap/free) editor or suite for me to get started in. I have borrowed a few books and can already see that my treatments of objects in VB has given me a good start in Java. I am looking for this tool to run in Classic or Cocoa. The target application/applet I want to develop would be client-server and would run on PC more often than not.

Core features of the application/applet would be graphical representation of objects stored in mainframe DB2 tables (meaning connection through JDBC or DB2 Connect).

So what is a good tool to help me build something?
