Is audio chat possible with a mac?

I am very angry that I spent $640 on a nice macintosh, and it can't even do audio chat, unless it's with other people who have also invested that much money in a computer. You can only have audio chat with iChat and others who have iChat. Either that, or they have to download a program like skype, and that's of inconvenience to them so they don't want to do it. Does anyone know of any universally compatable audio chat for macintosh? It can be for yahoo, msn or aim I don't care.

aim yahoo or msn messenger all support audio chat. The big secret...get a microphone if there's not one built in. What OS are you running?

?

AIM, Yahoo and MSN have deprived Mac users of A/V chat for years. MSN 5 for Mac is coming soon though...

Which seems odd to me. If his friend really wants to voice chat without worrying about platform problems, skype is a great choice. It works well, and I don't really see it as much of an "inconvenience" to ask someone to download it.

Oh, I agree. Skype is the best cross platform way to go there.

aol and yahoo

Just last year my ex and i were teasing my roommate by vncing into my home computer, turning on voice chat, then talking to him "from the great beyond" using yahoo messenger on a mac talking to a pc. They both should also support video chat. But my butt does alot of talking for me.

Audio Chat on Mac

The short answer is that there are ways, but not the way one would like (e.g. with the more popular Instant Messengers). I've done it with various oddball programs, including some peer-to-peer programs, and some which route through a voice-connection exchange (like a telephone exchange).

It's arguably easier to webcast one's voice (via ShoutCast) than to place a peer-to-peer voice connection with someone over a private voice channel.
