iMac (white mushroom base) DVD will not open

I have a PowerMac6,1 (version 3.3) iMac with the following specs:
1.0 Ghz speed
133Mhz Bus Speed
L2 cache size 256k
Mac OS X 10.2.8

CD-RW/DVD-R: Atapi DVD RW DW-U10A by Sony

I cannot seem to get the drive door to open and I am DESPERATE to burn some CDs.

Can anyone help me? I can't even seem to locate the "so-called" pin hole to force open it.

Thanks!

Meg

Try...

You probably know that if you wedge your fingernail in the white plastic drive flap and pull, it will open the flap. Could something be stuck in the flap and be jamming the drive mechanism. Try going to http://24.141.82.37/MVI_0492.AVI for a video of what I mean, if it is not clear.

If that doesn't work, try going to Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/). Select the drive and click eject.

Otherwise, try holding down the mouse button while booting - that works for me to open the drive when there's a stuck CD. This is the Mac's equivalent to the "so-called" pin hole.

Reboot...

and hold the mouse button down after the chime. If the drive is operational it will pop open. Also, fire up Disk Utility; if DU can't see the drive mechanism, the drive is probably hosed.
