Restart the finder (Command, option, esc then click finder and relaunch) or restart the computer
Are you using the touchpad to click or the button?
I did have this happen a number of years ago, and I seem to recall the problem was fixed by rebuilting the desktop file.
The quick way is to restart the computer and hold down Apple & Option keys until the boot process completes, and asks you if you want to rebuild the desktop.
The better way is to get an extension called Total Desktop Rebuild, which you can find here: http://www.montalcini.com/docs/free.html. As above, restart, hold down Apple & Option, and you'll see a new startup icon with a little lightning bolt in the corner of it. This will delete the old desktop files and rebuild it from scratch, instead of just re-writing it, which the first method does.
All the above is assuming that you're running OS 9 or earlier.
Well, thanks everyone...!! For real...I tried everything....
Unfortunatley now I have really screwed up. Now, in trying to find corrupted files (via a program cocktail) and restarting/ reorganizing/rebooting etc etc my cache/preferences, eveything is really whacked. My icons have disappeared from my dock and files, and connections that are supposed to be made automatically (ie, clicking on a web address in mail, which usually would open explorer automatically, etc)don't work!! It tells me something is wrong with my preferences, and too bad, I can't connect. Even an Endnote file, which, you would assume connects to Endnote and opens it when clicked, does not. Instead it asks me which program would I like to use to open it? Yikes.
Now what??
Should I just back up my stuff and re install OSX???
Heather
Sounds like a good idea to me.
That sounds like the safest way =/
You don't mention what OS you're using, so I'm assuming OS X. Use Disk Utility to verify & repair permissions on your drive. If that doesn't do the trick, and you're using Jaguar (OS 10.2) try an app called Dragster from IfThen Software.
