I was wondering if anyone had MIDI software that would work on System 6, 68000. I've tried StudioSession, but without the company's MIDI utility (which is no longer availible) it won't interface. Metroworks MIDIworks freezes up, and tells me (this is strange for a Mac 512k application) tells me that "Coproccessor not intstalled".
Am I doing something wrong?
You're trying to run software that doesn't work on a Mac 512k. The application is looking for a math coprocessor, which a 512k doesn't (and can't) have. Try running it on a newer machine, preferably one with a full 68040 processor.
Try looking for Mark of the Unicorn Performer, a really old version. That program was designed to work on the original mac I beleive and is a very good program.

I have version 3 (with the updates to 4.2) of Performa. The earliest Mac it runs on is a Plus. So *maybe* an earlier version will work on the 512. Somehow I doubt it.
. . . but I'm not trying to run it on a 512k. I'm trying to run it on a SE.
. . . speaking of which, does anybody happen to know where I can get a copy of the "Studio Session Midi Utility"? Or an equivalent?
Ahhh YES! A subject dear to my heart. I don't have a 68k mac here to test with, but there are quite a few interesting MIDI apps to play with. There is a 68k app called Phonogramme which is like a paint program - one can paint notes, chords, etc. I am sure that Logic 1 and 2 run on 68k machines. If you run a 68k version of MAX, then you should be able to set up any MIDI environment you can think of.
Lastly, one of the coolest 68k things I ever saw was a concert in Boston during the early '90s where Larry Polansky and Nick Didkovsky were improvising with their composition environment HMSL, Hierarchial Music Specification Language. HMSL was crazy high-level, in that you could use a Forth-like syntax to describe in general terms what you wanted a piece of music to sound like… and then hear it! Of course it could get very specific also. Fun stuff!
