Has anyone tried to connect a WXGA LCD to a slot loading imac?
would it work?

Maximum output resolution is 1024x768...the VGA out on iMacs is for video mirroring, and is constrained by the maximum resolution of the internal display.
well, my plan was to remove the internal CRT (since i messed up the red color drive while changing the clock battery)and use the vga port to connect an LCD monitor.
it was a bad idea, wasn't it?

Did it really go bad when you swapped the battery, or did you also try to upgrade to OS X sometime along the way? Video problems in those machines come quite often from bothched OS X installs w/o a firmware update. You might try updating the firmware to the latest version and seeing if that might fix your video.
i had updated the firmware and installed panther months before i broke it.
i touched what i believe to be the analogue video board with a screwdriver while changing the battery.
i mean, it was not a gradual colour shift as i hear from people who's machines have firmware problems.
i saw the display change colour as i heard the staticky sound of when i touched the circuitry with the driver.

Hardware fault confirmed.
Remember that the iMac uses odd refresh rate for anything less that 1024x768, so your LCD might not work with anything lower. Checking my BlueBerry, it shows 1024x768@75Hz, 800x600@95Hz, 792x594@96HZ and 640x480@117Hz.
so, the question now would be..
as Dr. Webster said before, the VGA port only mirrors the internal display, does that mean that if i remove the internal CRT i would not get any video signal out the VGA port?

With the internal display removed, it should still output to the VGA port. But IIRC, the max output res is still 1024x768.
i read somewhere that if you connect a monitor that supports higher res to the internal display connector you can get a max res of 1600X1200. i don't know how much truth there is to that though.
in fact i think it's highly questionable.

would a Wide lcd monitor be supported as long as the width is 1600 px or lower?
It depends on the LCD. If the iMac does, for some strange reason, support higher resolutions than 1024x768 and a widescreen aspect ratio, a widescreen LCD with VGA input should work....assuming the LCD doesn't use a nonstandard resolution.
In all likelihood, you're stuck at 1024x768. In that case, it really comes down to the LCD...some can interpolate to lower resolutions (sacrificing clarity, of course), while some can't.
My advice? If you want to use a different monitor on the iMac, go buy a 15" LCD. They almost all have a native 1024x768 resolution, so you'll end up with a nice, sharp image.
i guess i can manage to survive without a wide lcd monitor, would have been nice though.
