Totaly new to this forum, I just found an old Macintosh SE in my basement that my dad got a while ago. Its just the computer/ monitor, and i need to know where the best place is to find a key board, mouse, and power cable. Also, this is going to be my project. i can try to get some more specs on it later, but for now, all i know is that its got a 1mb ram, and i cant remeber the rest, haha.
But, what would be the cheapest and best place to buy a keyboard, mouse, and power cable for this, as well as some other stuff that i can do to it (programs, upgrade ram or more memory????)
Also, does anyone know what OS these systems ran? I have a iBook with OSX.2.8, and i've used a few macs with OS9 and OS8, but i have no idea about this one.
Thanks for your help ,and I'm trying to keep this low budget, just kind of a on the side funn thing to do.

Macintosh SE hardwear help
Hey
The best place for vintage gear is the LEM swaplist unless someone here has what you need. http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/swap.html
as for OS -- or more specifically SSW (system software) check here: http://www.lowendmac.com/compact/se.shtml
hey, thanks, but, at that first link, where can i buy some stuff for it? all i saw was like an e-mail swap list? I just need a place where i can get some cheap hardwear.
thanks
www.ebay.com
(im not endorsing ebay, but it is THE ONLY PLACE to find this stuff, for a decent price.)
Hey,
There's three possibilities for old gear that I'm aware of that don't rely on the randomness of dumpster diving. Since the Apple Store doesn't carry what you need, the remaining choices are: a) this site; b) eBay; and, c) swaplists. Having spent a number of years restoring and repairing toasters like yours, I found the LEM swaplist indespensible for basic parts as well as the errant accelerator, vid card, etc. While I don't endorse much of the editorial content on LEM and wouldn't recommend any of their computer-related lists, I still use the swaplist to get rid of my excess parts. Your call.
The power cable is easy; just grab a standard three-prong cable that would be used for any computer equipment. Generic stuff there.
The keyboard and mouse are standard ADB (Apple Desktop Bus.) You don't mention where you live, but there should be a Mac-centric shop near you somewhere. Most cities of any decent size will have at least one. That'd be your best bet; you should be able to pick something up for little or nothing. Or http://www.baucomcomputers.com/ has them, but I think their price is a little high for a mouse & keyboard ($15 for kb, $5 for mouse.)
Another possibility — if you're willing to poke around a bit — is thrift shops or computer recycling centers. Or if your city does computer recycling at the local landfill, you might be able to go in & poke around at the stuff that's been dumped.
WOW< THANKS SO MUCH DAVINTOSH. Very straight forward and exactly what i was looking for. I'll go to staples tommorrw some time and pick up a Power cable (i hope they would have it, i'd assume they would).
I live in a subarb of detroit, Grosse Pointe to be exact. I THINK theres a Macinstosh repair store near me that i might call tommorw and ask them about some things.
Do you think that a Staple would have that power cable? Or, is there any or major chain store that might have it? FYI Best Buy and Circut city are a haul for me.
Thanks
Peter
