What does Mac Prefect do and how to get rid of it?

I have a imac indigo 350 that I need to get working again.

It had macprefect on it when the drive started going bad.

When I got it, the drive was dead. So i swapped out hard drives but the system will still not boot to an os 9.0/8.0 cd of any type.

It needs its firmware updated before I go messing around with os x.

Now, the tech who used to work with the macs said that when she setup all the lab macs, she installed macprefect and locked them down pretty good including disabling the ablity to boot from a cd.

How can i regain the ablity to boot to the cd?

When the machine goes on with nothing in the cdrom drive, the icon flashes alternatly between the mac symbol and the question mark. I put the cd in and it keeps reading the cd but never actaully starts booting to it (the icons keep alternating).

I'm at a loss now. All i want to is get this system up and running again.

Have you tried booting with the CD in the drive while holding down the C key? How about the Option key?

I've never heard of MacPerfect before, but I'd gather it's just a run-of-the-mill hard drive lockout program. To disable booting from CD would require messing around with Open Firmware, which I don't think any 3rd party programs are able to do.
