my problem is i have an old ibook with only a cd rom drive and the copy of os x i just bought for it is on DVD, so is there any way I can use the DVD drive on my newer mac over the network to install?

if the ibook has firewire you can start it up in target disk mode as an external hd for the newer mac. and then install this way. installing over the network will be painfully slow.
Can you startup to the install CD with FTDM, i don't have that firewire cable so I haven't tried it.
It'd be slow, but if you can drop the DVD ROM into a USB enclosure it should be able to boot from it. If you've got a FW enclosure all the better.
