Ok, so I've got a 5200 with a dead PRAM battery (the square one in the plastic case with the wire leads on it) and I'm too cheap to spend $10 on a new one. After all, that'd be $10 more than I paid for the computer! Does anybody see any harm in strapping together three alkaline AAA's, wiring them in series, and use the wire harness from the dead battery to replace the spiffy (but dead) little RayoVac?

It's been done before, so no worries going the cheap route
If you find a useful battery socket for cheap, let us know!
With the power that AA's could put out, I'm thinking that the battery could last a long time.
...looks to be just the ticket. $1.69, and the store here has them in stock. And I've got the batteries on hand, so that oughtta do the trick.
Makes you wonder why Apple (and other computer makers) use such oddball batteries for their computers. There's a basic requirement for power to keep the PRAM alive, so why not use commodity item battery solutions instead of the high-dollar custom units?
