I’m new to this board, so forgive me if everybody knows this already. Has anybody else removed the little blue capacitor from a Performa 550? Located at the same place on the logic board as where a Color Classic needs one on its logic board for the 640x480 upgrade?
I’ve soldered these to 2 Color Classics and I get almost no black sidebars on ether display

Can you snap a couple of photos of the capacitors you're talking about, and where they'd get placed on the CC? Where did you hear of this hack?
Do you pull the cap from the 550 because you have a lot of them around to canabalize? It'd probably be easier to go to your local electronics shop to get capacitors; they'd likely cost less than 50 cents a piece, plus you've got more than the clipped leads to work with when placing them in the new installation.
I don't know of anyone doing it before, but it seems an idea that 'ought' to work. Thanks for the info.
As for it being easier to source the Cap from an electronics store, I'm not so sure. The CL26 capacitor has to be high voltage, and they are getting increasingly hard to source economically.

Sounds like a good idea to me if you have the 550s that are ready to go to the junk heap. Its cool to hear that people are still modding CCs and using them...
I tried various capacitors but none worked quite right. But when cannibalizing a 550, I noticed the logic board was almost identical to the CC except for the blue capacitor. I de-soldered it and then soldered it to the same spot in the CC. It worked great. I think I took pictures, if I can find them I’ll post them.
At one time I had a lot of 550’s from a school auction. Sadly, What else are you going to do with them?
