Hi all! I have a client who has some eMac OSX DVD's he wants to use to install OSX on his G3. His G3 doesn't have a DVD drive. I found some internals, but also found they need a decoder card installed as well, which I've read just fits into a slot on the video cards. (dumb question - I assume you also need a decoder card with an external DVD drive?)
I'm confident I can swing the install, but not so sure about pin switch settings.
Can anyone confirm for me if
a) are there pin switches that need to be adjusted once I install the internal drive?
b) any resources/docs that would walk me thru the process?
c) any thing I haven't thought of I should look out for?
Btw, just ran across this site today. Totally rocks.
The decoder card is only for the playback of DVD (MPEG-2) video. You won't need it to use data disks.
The process of installing a DVD drive isn't that difficult, but it will depend on which G3 tower you have. Blue & White or Beige. You can probably get a walkthrough at xlr8YourMac.com
On the drive itself, you should set it to be a Master drive as it will be replacing the current drive. Other than that, assuming the drive is compatible, it should work with no problems.
Hi, thanks so much for replying. Found an excellent walkthru on xlr8YourMac.com that answers all my questions. Thanks again.
