The newton I got has a screen that has probably seen better days. I was wondering if I could use that liquid lense stuff, or would that ruin the screen. Thanks.

I rejuvenated a Palm screen using Johnson paste floor wax.
Usual process for wax applies: put it on thin, let it dry to a haze, buff it off with a clean cloth, rotating it frequently so any crud you remove doesn't add more scratches.
After that, slap on a screen protector (good ones can be made from overhead transparency sheets).
I'll give that a try!
