I have cookies wide open on my install of IE5.1 (OS 9), and it regularly forgets that I'm logged in.

Same happens in NS7 and IE for Win. It's not cookie settings - it's AF.

I never get logged out from AF on my WinXP machine at home (IE 6), but I have to log in every time I log into my machine at work, which is on a domain. I think it has to deal with Windows user profiles.

never had any problems in Safari (iBook)... or IE 5.1 (iMac) ... must be your cookie settings!

OK. Just keep saying that. Maybe if you say it enough, it will be true...

I access AF using a bunch of different browsers on a passle o'puters running various OSes from 8 to X to Win2K and on any of 'em if I don't visit AF from that 'puter for several days I'll be logged out next visit from that 'puter.

AF's 'fault'?? Dunno, but it's pretty consistant behaviour over quite a range of hardware and software.

I just went to my Safari prefs, and looked at the expiry date on the Applefritter cookie. For me, it's September 27, 18 days from now. I've been logged out before, but it doesn't seem like the cookies are to blame on this one.

It happens to me all the time. I will get logged out like once every 2 or 3 days on each of my computers. I never really noticed a pattern but I do notice that it happens frequently and it is something i kept meaning to bring up myself.

Its funny, i still have a bookmark to the old fritter site and i am still logged on to it from way back when.

Yeah, me too. I won't be logged out until 2038, according to my cookie.... But I'll be logged out of AF 2.0 in 3 weeks, according to my current cookie. Still, that seems longer than I experience - I seem to get logged out once every week or so. I haven't really kept a log, but it's certianly more often then once a month.

Beginning 24 hours ago, I have to log in every single time I launch Safari. Even if I quit Safari and immediately relaunch, I have to re-login when I go to Applefritter.

I looked through my cookies and found two pairs of Applefritter cookies. Each pair included a login cookie and password cookie, and each cookie had an expiration date of Jan 16, 2038. One pair was under www.applefritter.com, and the other pair was under .www.applefritter.com.

So I deleted all those cookies, quit Safari, relaunched Safari, and went to Applefritter again. This time when I logged in, only one cookie was set. It is a PHP Session ID cookie, and it has no expiration date at all. It is under www.applefritter.com.

The problem persists, however. Now every time I log in, I have the one PHP Session ID cookie, but its contents changes every with every login. So I'm unable to get a persistent cookie.

I can't help wondering if something hasn't changed in AF's backend recently.

Regardless, this blows.

I extended the expiration time in .htaccess from 2 million seconds to 2 billion yesterday, but I don 't think that's it. I'll keep looking around.

because I set my system date ahead a few years and then logged in. I'm curious to see if that date sticks as long as I don't log out.

BTW, I thought of that after reading that's a good way to eliminate the annoying QuickTime Pro upgrade pop-up.

As of Monday afternoon I do not have to login every time I relaunch Safari.

I notice also that my PHPSessionID cookie now has an expiration date listed (2011, like Dan's), instead of the previous situation where it listed no expiration date (which Safari evidently took to mean it had already expired).

I'm befuddled, but that's not news. I just tried a series of experiments to try and understand the nature of this here cookie thing. Please understand that I know absolutely nothing about how cookies work and so this all may be blindingly obvious to those-in-the-know.

First off, the contents of the cookie don't change whether you're logged in or out. However, the expery date does change/advance upon each successful contact with the server.

Different clients of course have different cookie contents and their logged-in state is independent of the states of any other logged-in client. eg: On a single machine I can be logged in under Safari and out under FireFox. Same independant states exist of course for clients on different machines.

While I imagine the problem, whatever it was, is now fixed, it's interesting to note that the logged-in state is obviously is stored on the server and not locally. That suggests that perhaps there is some sort of limit on the number of currently logged-in clients per member ID. This would explain why the problem doesn't seem to be related to the cookie's expery date.

I wonder if those complainers (of which I am one) are those users who routinely log in from a larger number of clients than those users for whom there is no problem.

ps: Next experiment is to log in from a series of different clients and see when the first logged-in client loses its logged-in status.

Well, I got up to 7 clients logged-in simultaneously and the earliest one remains still logged in.

I did get one anomoly where a previously logged-in client with a Sept 8 (2 days from now) cookie expery didn't reload as logged in.

It's all probaby moot anyway, so what the heck!

It looks like the 2 billion seconds I chose the other night must have been out of bounds. I decreased the number to something like 20 million. If anybody still has problems let me know.

This from my iBook 700 + Safari with which I last visited AF on 7 Sept. Today is 10 Sept and as I reopened Safari I find I'm logged out.

Is that because I had shutdown the Mac in the meantime?

I'm gonna test that now, restarting now . . .

I just got the logout problem again. I was off to a weekend family gathering and haven't been on since Fri. Now I get on Mon. afternoon and I'm logged out. Moz. on OS X, and it seems to happen on nearly any machine I use if I don't visit with it every few days.

I got bumped off today. Not a big deal, just a bit of a pain.

I've been logged out three times this week - twice in IE 5 OS 9 on a Pismo, once in IE on Win. Those are the only browsers I've used to visit AF this week.

Starting today, every time I go to AF, I have to login again.

My PHP sessionID cookie expires in 2011, so I dunno what the problem is.

Tom, if you've changed something about the server settings in the past 24 hours, that's probably the cause.

It seems that AF gets confused if you have too many sessions running at the same time. I opened a bunch of windows @ AF in different fora (It's a habbit - I tend to open links in new windows instead of just following the link like a "normal" person).

Before my very eyes, I became logged out in two of the windows, but remain logged in in this one. I suspect that when I come back to AF again (after this session times out), I'll be completely logged out.

That could be a clue to follow...

I use up to 4 different computers to access AF with. And I will sometimes leave one up with AF open and then go home for the night and then logon at home with one or 2 computers. So that makes sense to me as well.

Sounds like you could be onto something.
