A bit puzzled abouf the iMac second edition IDE...

Hello All,

I would like to put a sony slot loading CDR in a second edition iMac. Is this possible?

Will it line up?

Is the IDE different?

I look forward to your answers!

Cheers

the imac takes LATOP type cd drives, if its normal ide it will not work or fit. try googling "imac cd replacement" and seeing what comes up as other companies made replacement ones(even dvd burners)

Technically, the drive in the slot-loading iMacs isn't a laptop drive, either. It's strange pseudo-proprietary Apple thing, the same form factor used in the Cube. The data connector is the same as used in laptop drives, but the chassis is substantially larger. Some of the third-party replacement drives for those systems *are* normal laptop drives, but they comee stuffed into a bracket which adjusts the form factor appropriately.

A normal desktop-size drive definately won't fit.

Ok. I know that the iMac has

Ok. I know that the iMac has one ide channel and can thus only suport 2 internal drives. Can anyone tell me, if there are 2 apple ide connectors on the mobo ( one for cd and one for harddrive) or just one with a 2 way apple ide cable?

I really need the info..

Cheers

There's a single 50 pin connector on the motherboard. The first 40 pins are "normal IDE", the last 10 are the power and audio leads for the CD-ROM drive. Plugged into it is a wacky cable which carries 50 pins to the CD-ROM drive, narrows to 40 pins at that connector, and continues on to the HD.

Proprietaryriffic!
