I'm new to this site so I don't know if this is the proper place to post this so anyway
Any answer on this problem will be helpfull.Older iMac running OS8.6 stops half way during start up.
That is to say the icons along the bottom of the screen start to appear, get to a certain point and then the computer just locks up.
I poke the hole on the side and hold down the shift key so as to turn off the extentions as it restarts and the desktop appears but as soon as I try to do anything it locks up.
I have a new iMac so its not so bad but I use the old one in my studio to run some guitar processors.
If it's something major I will have to wait to get some money to get it fixed.
Thanks ahead for any help

Seems like you have an extension conflict. An extension conflict is when two (or more) extensions try to occupy the same area of memory (think of a giant dogpile). Start up holding down the shift key, then access the Extensions Manager control panel. If you made any recent changes to your extension setup they might be causing this. Some extensions have to be loaded in a certain order to play well with others . Also try disabling extensions that you aren't using.
