It's probably just a system software problem. Most of the icons have turned into the generic peice of paper with the little folded corner, including the finder and system icon. Also, I get bomb messages at random times, even when I'm not running any apps or doing anything. So I think I am going to try and find system 7.6 somewhere in floppy disk form. Does 7.6 include Apple Remote Access with it? Is that what you need to use dial up?

You might try rebuilding the desktop (hold down Command + Option while its booting). Depending on the OS , it will either rebuild automatically or ask if you want to do that. You might also consider running Disk First Aid to see if your HD has any problems.
Good luck!
I already did all that stuff
I think it's because I looked at the system software with ResEdit
Hmmm.. Yes ResEdit can do horrible evil things to System files, although "just looking" shouldn't cause problems as long as you never "save changes."
A clean install might be the next order of business. They are not so bad as there is no data loss, per se. The only pain comes from manually moving over any special Control Panels, Extensions, and Preferences from the old system folder.
I hope your 5300 feels better soon.
