Check your PRAM battery.
i tried but it didnt work it is a brand new battery
Is the computer an early slot-loading iMac? In which case, you probably fell into the trap of installing OS X without upgrading your firmware first.

There's some suggestions for resurrecting it in this thread:

Google and you'll find more. Note, however, that the consensus in a lot of cases seems to be that unless your iMac is a model that includes a VGA port you're boned.

Stupid question, but have you tried resetting the PRAM?

I ran into the same kinda trouble when I bought a used "dead" iMac. What model is it exactly? Mine is a slot-load 350MHz BlueBerry. All it needed was a firmware upgrade, and a few OS re-install/upgrades.
