Hello all,
I am a Music Informatics student and I have recently been getting much more into vintage computing. Emulators are great and all but I have a great desire to play on the real thing. I am very interested in sourcing an Apple IIGS in order to play with the Ensoniq chip inside.
The only problem is that I am in the UK and ultimately I may be forced to buy one from the US.
My main concern here is the differences in our power supplies, I understand that I will need a transformer of some description but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to whether the IIGS has any specific power requirements, that I don't destroy it when I first plug it in.
Furthermore, is it possible to replace the internal PSU so that it would be compatible with a 220-240v 50Hz power supply?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Alex
Alex,
Have you tried the UK version of ebay? The should have vintage Rev 01 and Rev 03 IIgs machine there for sale and you wouldn't even have to worry about your power supply.
That I have Steven, but they truly seem to be few and far between.
I will keep trying tho at the moment I'm kind of resolved to having to source one form the States even tho the shipping is going to kill me.
On that note it appears that shipping is most monstrous for the monitor -any advice on compatible monitors I could use or on a VGA adapter that is available or that I could wire up myself?
Thanks
Alex
Have a look at the csa2 FAQ on monitors.
The US power supply says 120 volts 60hz 70 watts, if that helps you with a transformer.
If you can't find a UK IIgs PSU, you could use a standard PC ATX power supply with the LittlePower adapter:

I have one and it works fine, the main problem is finding a PSU small enough to fit in the case.
If it's an early IIgs, there is space on the PCB for a //e power connector. If you have a UK //e PSU and an extra connector, you could solder that connector in and use that PSU, though I doubt that you could get it to fit in the IIgs case.
