I have a two-CD-plus-upgrade set of gray iBook G4 disks; I am assured the iBook it came from is a corpse. It installs 10.3.3 and then upgrades it to 10.3.9. I have been trying installing it on different machines. It installs fine on iBook G3 with CD-ROM drive. Works on a Lombard with the DVD module. But when the Lombard has the CD drive in, it will format and partition but can't install. I get a red arrow and the message that it is unable to install.
This is kind of weird and I was wondering if anybody has an idea why it would act like that.
Looking at the description of the Lombard here, it looks like it's very much in a world of its own (the DVD drive sounds archaic) and may require its own machine-specific installation disks, or a retail version, and because of its idiosyncrasies, the iBook's machine-specific disks are recognizing an imposter. Even if you could install, you may not want to because you might run into troubles. It's not always nice to fool with Mother Nature and EULA's.
I'm curious why you add the info that the iBook is a corpse. Is there some significance of that for this problem?
The gray discs that come with a specific model Mac, generally only work with that model and not other model Macs.
In addition, the license for Mac OS only allows installation on one Mac, not multiple Macs.
Cheers, Tom

That's what's weird. (This is all by way of an experiment.) Lombard seems to run just fine with the installation from the disks, it just doesn't like them with its CD drive.
The reason I specified that the iBook the disks came from was dead, is that I figure it liberates its disks to go with another machine.
I'm going to be putting Tiger on the iBook G3 before long.
So you're saying, same Lombard, installs with DVD drive, but doesn't when the DVD drive has been replaced with a CD drive, or is it two different Lombards, one with DVD, the other with a CD drive, and it installed on the one with the DVD but won't with the one with the CD drive?
Same Lombard.
