well i was reading up on software decoding on os 9 last night when i came across a page that said it was possible to use dvd player 2.7 with a patch to play movies in os 9 without the decoder card. i was tempted, so i got the program and the patch and tried it. seemed to work up until it said it didn't support my video card or settings. i've been doing some more reading and apparently there were patches for 2.2 and 2.4 at one point, and i think those might be more compatible with my video card. if anyone knows of them, where are they now?

BTW what video card do you have in your Mac
that's the one i have already. like i said, it works but apparently won't support my video card. i tried the suggestion in the warning box of reducing the resolution by hooking the computer up to a tv and going through the different resolution settings, but i really don't want to have to hook the computer up to the tv to view dvds when i have a hdmi dvd player for that. anyway, that didn't work.
the video card in my powerbook, according to the system profile, is an ati 264lt-g. so unless one of the 2.x versions of the dvd player supports that and has a patch to work on os 9, i don't know what else to do.

The DVD Player (even patched) expects a Rage 128 or better at least. All the PowerBooks that shipped with a Rage 128 (Pismo, Titanium G4s) already play DVDs without the patch.
All the patch is intended to do is allow DVD playback on desktop Macs with aftermarket Rage 128 (or better) PCI video cards installed. The Rage 128 DVD Decoder daughtercard is not required after the patch is applied.
Wallstreets won't play DVDs without the hardware DVD decoder for the Zoomed Video card slot.

so basically i'd need the decoder card, or vlc through linux or os x on an upgrade processor. well that sucks. if that's the case, i really need a good guide for getting linux to actually work!
Ya know, if Apple doesn't support DVD decoding on low-end G3s, there's probably a good reason. I think it would just be a waste of time to try running Linux or OS X and VLC to get DVD playback on a Wallstreet, and it would be a waste of money to track down a G4 to get marginal DVD playback performance...
Are we still talking about your Wallstreet that you were asking about a few months ago? http://www.applefritter.com/node/21857 Didn't we decide then that there's just no way for your Wallstreet to decode DVDs in OS 9 without the DVD decoder and that even upgrading to a fast (500 MHz+) G3 or G4 CPU might not give you enough horsepower to perform well w/ VLC?
Just bite the bullet and buy the DVD decoder card. You'll spend less on that than a processor upgrade, and if you had done that in the first place, you wouldn't have messed up the CPU module trying to overclock your Wallstreet...

mm well aware of that. i suppose i should just get the stupid decoder card. i'm just aggravated that they're still so expensive, and i spent a good 80 bucks on my mce drive that currently is only able to read data dvds and cds and only burn cds and cd-rs. well, i'll see. this was probably the last possible method of getting playback without the card, so hopefully no more of this.
Do you have electronics swap meets near where you live? I know that at the one by my place I've seen those cards in the neighborhood of $5. Of course there is no guarantee at that price.
