I've been trying to upgrade my duel 500mg processer g4from OS9 to Tiger 10.4.
I had run Panther for many years and then I decided to wipe the computer clean and restore the original OS9 software. Then upgrade it to Tiger. Now when I do this I get about a quarter of the way through the install and I get an (error code: Memory Failure) This I have never seen. Is there anyone who could help me or explain what I need to do to get Tiger up and running?
This is a very time sensitive issue for me.
Thanks.
Greg
OS 9 has a built in RAM test at startup, it can identify memory problems and it alerts you to them. For some reason, I don't think OS X has this capability; I had put a faulty stick in my sister's G4, which was running OS 10.4 and the OS completely crapped the bed within a month on her. I had no idea why she was having problems, so I took the machine back and reinstalled everything. I installed 9 first, though, and the first thing that came up on the screen was that memory error message. Wish I had started with 9 before I gave her the machine
Try each memory stick one by one and see if you can find the culprit. You may also just have to re-seat the chips.
Your post was a big vague on whether you're getting the error re-installing OS 9, or while you're installing Tiger.
The G4s (and G3s) are very picky for memory, and as recommended above, finding and replacing the troublesome dimm should be your priority.
