My sister has a 450mhz AGP G4 tower running 10.4; inside are two hard drives, an 8 gig one and a 10 gig for storage. OS X is installed on the 8gig drive.
I have a G3 AIO and a couple iMacs, and in my experiences with those and OS X, I needed to create an 8gig or smaller partition for OS X, because it wouldn't boot or something stupid like that if X was installed on a larger partition.
My question is whether I need to do the same kind of formatting run-around for the new hard drive I'm going to be installing for her. It's an 80gig drive. I'm accustomed to and familair with all the hoops you have to jump through with pre-gossamer Macs, but these other ones are still a mystery to me. Any help would be appreciated 
They don't have the 8-Gig Partition limit. Go ahead and partition it how you like it.
Nope, all you have to do is pop in the 80GB drive, boot off the installer CD, format/partition the drive, and install your OS.
The only drive related problem the Sawtooths have (that I am aware of) is the fact it can't access more than 128GB, but a PCI ATA card will often take care of that problem.
I use Intech's ATA Hi-Cap driver for the 250GB HD in my Sawtooth and my sister's Gigabit Ethernet's 250GB HD and have not had a single problem with either.
thanks for the input guys, not really worried about a thing now (which most likely means something else will blow up in my face...but I'll deal with that when the time comes). I'll be doing this later today; hopefully the machine will be in my hands within a year, and I'll get to do some real work on it
