Bondi Blue 233 boot problems

Hi all.
I recently come along an old bondi blue 233 rev a(ithinks) imac. I noticed it had a 4 gig hdd and i have tried to replace this with a 20 gig hdd however all the copies of 9.2.2 i come across and and burn on my 24" imac (Disk utility, master cd/dvd, toast, etc) will not boot, not even a original panther disk. So i put back in the old 4 gig hdd and loaded up 9.2 and mounted the cd(s) and they show up fine.

So i put the 20 gig hdd in a usb enclosure formatted as extended (not standard) and copied over the whole hdd from the 4gig to the 20gig and i checked for the icon on the system folder to make sure it was blessed. So i plug the 20 gig back into the imac and turn on with a pram reset and still no joy. Next stage was to remove the jumper from master to cableselect (no joy) and then taking it out completly and still the thing does not want to read cds at boot and will not recognise my copy on the 2ogig drive.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any input Biggrin

Yeah, the jumpers would be th

Yeah, the jumpers would be the first guess. You'd have to change the jumpers on the CD drive to cable select too, I believe. What brand is the 20gig? If you have to put the 4 gig back in, you might want to check what the ROM version the iMac is in Apple System Profiler. Those iMacs had a few different firmware updates you can download at Apple's site, including one for the CD drive.

Re: Bondi Blue 233 boot problems

Hi all.
I recently come along an old bondi blue 233 rev a(ithinks) imac. I noticed it had a 4 gig hdd and i have tried to replace this with a 20 gig hdd

Two things come to mind: 8GB partition and the Firmware. See below:

If you upgrade your Macintosh computer from its original hard drive to a new hard drive that is larger than 8 GB, you may see some odd symptoms, such as one of these:
When the computer starts up, it displays a gray screen. The desktop never appears.
When the computer starts up, it shows a white screen, with text that includes the phrases, "Open Firmware" and "default catch".
When the computer starts up, you may see an alert message such as "unimplemented trap" or "segment loader error".
When you try to install Mac OS X on the computer, the hard disk is dim and can't be selected in the installer.

This only happens with certain Macintosh computers that originally had a hard drive smaller than 8 GB, and that have now been upgraded with a hard drive larger than 8 GB. These computers include:
iMac 233 MHz
iMac 266 MHz
iMac 333 MHz
Power Macintosh G3 Desktop
Power Macintosh G3 Mini Tower
Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One
iBook
iBook (FireWire)
PowerBook G3 Series

If you have just upgraded the hard drive on one of the computers listed above and you see this issue occurring, here's how to get everything running smoothly again:
Back up all your data. (This is a good thing to do regularly, not just now!)
Start up from your Mac OS installation or restore disc.
Use Drive Setup (in Mac OS 8 or 9) or Disk Utility (Mac OS X) to partition the drive. Make the first partition smaller than 8 GB, and any other partitions can be any size you want.
Install the Mac OS in the first drive partition.

After this is done make sure your firmware is up to date for your particular iMac.

Interesting. I thought the 8G

Interesting. I thought the 8GB thing was only about installing OS X on these machines--and wasn't the 8GB problem resolved with Panther or something like that and it was no longer a problem if you were installing Panther? I thought I had read that somewhere. What's also interesting is that the early IDE Powermacs aren't included in your list. I had no problem upgrading my 6500 from it's original 2GB (?) to a 20GB. Could the brand of harddrive also have something to do with this problem?

Not my list, its Apple's list. Guess I should've told everyone that was quoted from Apple's website.

and back to the original question...I reread it a few times and am getting more confused.

After you put in the internal 20gig drive in the iMac and put in the OS 9.2.2 CD in the tray loader are you holding down the "c" key when rebooting to boot from the CD drive (bypassing the internal drive)?

That should be all you need to do. Once you get to the desktop after booting from the 9.2.2 CD you can use Disk Utility to format and initialize the 20 gig as a two partion drive as I quoted above from Apple's website.

I have done this procedure many times. Dumping the 4 gig internal Maxtor Apple drive is always the first thing for 233mhz tray loaders. Second is getting a 333mhz processor card from Ebay and swapping the 233 out.

Lastly keep in mind that 233mhz tray load cd drives are very finicky with burned discs.

Yeh i held down the c key fro

Yeh i held down the c key from when i turned on the computer and had no luck which is why i decided to try and clone the original hard drive.

All my firmware is uptodate and i have just tried partitioning my disk with 7gig on the first partition and 12gb on the remainder un the format Mac os extended (with os 9 drivers installed). Then i restored from a backed up image and put it in the imac done a pram reset and still no luck :(. Next stage is to wait till landlord car is gone from drive and i will chuck it out window.

Could be the brand

Have you tried any other hard disks in the machine? My experience with iMac Rev. Bs was that they're really picky about what hard disks they would play nice with. During the first round of trying to upgrade one I tried a 10GB Fujitsu, a 15GB IBM Deskstar, and a 30 GB Quantum, and the Quantum was the only one it liked enough to install an OS on. Since then I've found that Maxtors seem to always work, as do IBM Deskstars bigger then 40 GB. Western Digital is hit and miss, and I haven't tried a Seagate.

Of course, those iMacs are buggy little monsters, so the hate-list of yours may well be different.

Yeh odd you say only quantums

Yeh odd you say only quantums work. The original drive was a quantum and the drive im trying to fit is a seagate. Will have a try a few others.

Thanks

Drive Size Limit?

have you tried with the drive Size limit option on the drive turned on? if you use it, I have seen that OS X will sometimes see around that, so if you want to go that route, you can do that. Not sure about OS 9...

Quantums

They will...

99% of Mac hard drives right from day one were Quantums.

But IDE and Macs... any should work. I fitted a 20gb Seagate drive to a Powermac 5500 and that worked straight away. No problems at all. And it's one big 20gb partition running MacOS 8.6

Phantom Drive

Okay thanks for the replies so far. Im starting to get somewhere. I decided to bid on an original install cd for os 9 on ebay and the cd works and boots up. Thats one problem out of the way. However the hard drive will only show up if i plug the hdd into my g4 and format the disk in osx using one 4 gig partition then swap the hdd back into the g3 imac. But once os9 is installed the drive disappears on a reboot. Strange. I decided to get a rev b logic board etc and see if i get better results with that.
