long time sinde my last post - i was over in ubuntu land for awhile.
but i have (for those who dont remember me) a G3 AIO with two hd's 100mbzip and a liteOn-it cd-rw. i mention all this so you guys have an idea of the insides. the 52x32x52x cd-rw has had no problem till now. it is probably just about one year old.
when i try to transfer data, halfway through the session it just stops. half the time it kille the computer, sometimes it freezes the finder and sometimes only affects what app is using it(ie itunes). here's the crazy part, it is perfect and without flaw when used in os9 boot. the problems are only in osX.
back story: used the drive in osx for about a year, when i was fooling around with ubuntu, i put it in that box (about two months). for way too complex reasons, i decided to go back to osx, but with a fresh install. because i didnt want to spend ten hours loading panther with the cd's i install a dvd drive and loaded from the dvd. after all apps and all seemed fine, i put the cd-rw back in. problems abounding upon reboot. xpostfacto caught some bad kernel and replaced them, but that didnt end it. found that i had an ide cable backwards and flipped it. manouvured the jumpers on all the drives to switch the slave amster relations, but it still happens.
fortunately what i have done so far has helped the system, but when i was importing a cd into itunes, haldway through track six, you here the cd spin down to stop and itunes is still trying to import.
any ideas?

ok so i think i have fixed it. i downgraded the rom from revision 3 to 2. i think this has solved it all. i have just burned a cd that was imported right before. maybe this is the answer. maybe rom 3 for the beige g3 didnt like panther. maybe i had a bad chip. oh well, it is a path for others to follow when troubleshooting an unknown issue.
