hello again, everyone. I have a connundrum for you:
I kept the PCI video card from my parted out tower I was using as a server (which I never got to work after the 3rd motherboard blew, and I decided to give up on). it is a ATI Mac64 GX.
I was wondering if I could get it working with my B&W G3, so I can have 2 monitors on this thing. so, I move my USB 2.0 card down a slot, and insert the Mach64 right under the ATI Rage 128 (with DVD decoder). the Rage is istting in the 66mhz slot, and the mach64 in a 33mhz slot. I hooked my one monitor up to the mach64, and I get nothing on the screen. however, I get instant video when it is hooked up to the Rage.
what is going on? do I need to flash the firmware on the mach64? if so, where can I get the firmare file and utility? I looked on ATI's site, and all I see are drivers for the mach64 under windows.
note: when I did have Ubuntu 5.10 on here (just as a temp. OS), the Ubuntu device manager saw the ATI mach64 GX, but I couldnt get any video on it.

Power macintosh G3 (Blue and White)
PowerPC 750 350mhz (overclocked to 400mhz)
512mb of ram (3x 128mb, and 1x 256mb, though only 128 of that is seen in the OS)
maxtor 10gb HDD
PCI card 1: ATI Rage 128, 16mb vRam, and DVD decoder
PCI card 2: ATI Mach64 GX
PCI card 3: generic USB 2.0 5 port (4 external, 1 internal) with NEC chipset
PCi card 4: empty
Mac OS 9.2.2
Apple ADB AppleDesign Keyboard 
Apple white Pro USB mouse

AFAIK, the Mach64 is not flashable, and a PC version of the card has not yet been made to run on a Mac.
With both cards installed and the monitor hooked up to the Rage, did you check the Apple System Profiler to see if it is recognizing the Mach64? If it is, try removing the Rage and hook the monitor to the Mach64 still in the 33mhz slot and see what happens.

and under that is the entry for the USB card, under that is the blank slot, and the last entry for PCI is the ATI rage 128, which is what it shows up as.
I dont see why this card isnt working. from the info from ASP, it should.

Yeah, it looks like it's a PC video card, not for a Mac. ATI had a couple of old Mach64 video cards for Macs, but I would assume the drivers would still be included in OS 9. ATI has a universal driver set for legacy Macs you can download at their site. Don't know if it includes the old Mach64's.
The tower you pulled it out of was not a Mac?

I went through a similar experience, getting back to the PCI card, with an Adaptec SCSI card. It was a 2906, for Macintosh I thought, but it ended up being the PC version. System Profiler would see that there was a card there, but not that it was Adaptec, nor could I use it with Adaptec's drivers.
where is this universal driver? I looked on ther website, and found nothing.
and, no. it was a generic frankenstein PC i assembled myself. generic pentium 233 board, 64mb ram, 2 NICs, a couple hard drives, and several other bits. oh, it did have a 5.25 floppy, CD-ROM, NEC IDE ZIP drive (which wont work in this thing, I tried.), and a 3.5" floppy.
that thing is going out soon (look for it soon in the FS/T section, at least the case and AT power supply), and I am replacing it with a nice little compaq presario, with 2 NICs (same ones from old tower), built in sound, USB, video, and various bits (again).

i you pulled it out of a pc it will not work on a mac, to date ati has only one card that supports mac and pc on the same board, previuosly you had cards like the radeon 9600pro and the 9600pro Mac edition this new one is based off the new X1000 chipset and is one sweet card
however any other cards dont have cross platform support.
Oh by the way excluding SLI and Crossfire cards i do not know of any mobo/video cards that support multiple cards. if you want dual monitor support you need a card that has that, you cannot use two pci video cards.

I think the mest card for this machine is the radeon 9200. 128mb ram, onboard DVD decoder, DVI and VGA ports, as well as S-VIDEO, and support under OS 9. soon...

yeah go for it, just dont doanything like plug an AGP card in a PCI slot and you should be fine. another point i have had the problem with newer cards on older machines not working right for example, my freinds AthlonXP 1.8ghz we upgraded the onboard video to a radeon 9550 64mb card, but the mobo wouldnt except it even after updating the BIOS and chipset. so we settled for a 32mb radeon 7000. im not sure if macs have the same problem but its something to keep in mind.
Uh, that might be true in PC-land, but I'm pretty darn sure it's not true with Macs. I'm running a dual monitor G3 with one PCI card and the onboard video, and I'm -reasonably- sure (willing to be shot down by someone who knows for sure) that I've seen multiple card setups in Macs before.
And some older ATI and Voodoo cards can definitely be cross-flashed from PC to Mac firmware. True none will just plug and play across systems, but you can hack it.
Go to strangedogs.com for PC to Mac video card flashing info. But I doubt there's anything there for Mach64. And the question is, why would anyone bother?
Dual monitors is one of the attractive features of Macs for designers and video production. I've done dual monitors in the past with Macs a few times. I don't remember if I did it with a B&W though.
I would suggest getting a radeon 7000. there relatively easy to flash, and you'll be happier with the results. (you might need a fan though) Look around, one can probably be had for a little as $35-$40. (a pc version)
Ive run 2 PCI Video cards in my B&W.
I had an agp and a pci video card in a pc also. That worked for dual monitors. You can also do it with 2 pci cards in a pc, just like on a mac.
Not true. I personally have run a reflashed r7k and rage3d pci in a b&w. Worked like a champ with no problems whatsoever.
tye thing with SLI/Crossfire is that they use 2 cards to drive one monitor. so you essentially get double the video card. it would be like combining 2 rage 128's in different slots to drive the monitor hooked up it one of the 128's. the output is from one card bue the 2 cards share the processing.
any computer mac or pc can run 2 different cards to 2 different monitors. heck you can even run 1 monitor off of onboard video and one off of a card.
