Okay, I just did a clean install of OS 9.1 onto Connie (PM8600 with 500MHz upgrade, 512MB RAM). I am running the base extension set with speech recognition turned on (all related items in the package). This is as vanilla as it can be.
SR fails to start and suggests I reinstall or restart (tried both). Text-to-Speech seems to work okay.
What can I do to make it work? (Yes, in a previous software config many moons ago, SR worked on this hardware but I cannot recreate that environment - hence the clean install...)
TIA
I have tried reinstalling the software for SR and turning off un-needed extensions added in by OS 9.1 Base, turning on ones I think I need to support this.
Sound is good as far as playing tones and alerts and speaking text from alerts, but I cannot get SR to start up...
Which version have you got? I seem to recall that the 'PlainTalk' branded one only works with the av Quadras (it used their DSP). Any newish version should be fine with PowerMacs, though.
software is version 1.5.4
How about the Microphone? If you set the input to "sound input" can you hear your voice through the speakers? Or don't you even get that far, as in, it won't start?
the mic is good - i can record new sounds for use as alert sounds and such.
It is the actual SR application - when I try to open speech control panel, I get the message and then it proceeds to open but only lets me alter the talking alerts, nothing that will listen to me.
Still no love or luck on this...
Was searching through some old disks and I may have a restore disk for my long since departed 233 iMac. If I can find it, I may throw this up on one of the many drives in Connie and see if it works. I am very confident that it is not a hardware issue but just cannot isolate the software problem that keeps SR from working.
