RAID on a trash can

I’ve been using a trash can Mac as a video server. I like using a RAID array with it but I’ve had an issue with all windows on the RAID drive being closed after start up with any OS after 10.10. I’ve theorized that that as because the drives take longer to get going than a regular drive. A short while ago I picked up a 1tb Lacie RAID array with two SSDs which seemed to confirm that. However I needed at least 8tb of hard drive which was a little too pricey no matter how I did it.

In the meantime I picked up a Kingston USB-c flash drive that would do 1gb/sec on my MBP. I expected slower with a USB A adapter but the Mac running 10.10 couldn’t read the format. Reformatting to something it could read slowed the flash drive considerably. Made me want to run a newer OS even more. I was also wondering when I’d run into a video that wasn’t supported  by any App that’d run on 10.10.

Then on boxing day I saw a sale on 4tb QLC drives. QLC drives have good read speeds but slower write speeds but I figured that with RAID 0 it wouldn’t be too bad and it seems fast enough for my use

Went from 10.10 to 12.1 and everything is working exactly the way I want
