Absolutely Cool!

Yeh man.. Too cool for school!
I'm curious about Apple's take on this. Even 30 years old, the original ProDOS is still an Apple product; did they give you license to the original source?
Very cool in any case.
I don't think they'll lose any money over it.
But I agree this is really cool and I thank all those who were involved.
Really cool stuff... many thanks to those who get this done.
Getting a bit of media attention - great to see. Good job on the new version.
Getting media attention "because Apple"..
I saw it on Slashdot.
It's even on Popular Mechanics. Wow.
After reading the articles and all the mistakes and misconceptions in the user commentary - I wonder if I should be impressed. The file management tools are Copy II Plus. And is there a real benefit to running PRODOS on a II or II+?
The //e has the necessary modifications and firmware ready to roll.
But still nice to see these version bumps, official or unofficial.
I think that if you can get software working on a II or II+ that requires Prodos then that is a good thing.
What I don't like is the screen stating that this particular part of the OS is authored by people:
"Bitsy Bye program launcher by J.Brooks P.Ferrie and Bitsy Boot utility by John Brooks."
You just don't see that in any OS.
Let's try to add to Windows all parts of the functionality added to the source code the names of the coders when you use windows.
"Windows start menu by "alan dayne" every time you left click on the windows icon or:
"Windows personalization by "edgar smith" every time you right click on the desktop...
Yes! Now that I think about it that's what upset me about this release.
I don't recall seeing names plastered all over DOS 3.3 or the original ProDOS versions.
That and the fact that a good portion of the advertised functionality (UTILITIES) is provided by a 3rd party company in the form of Copy II Plus.
Maybe I'll change my mind once I get into it and check it out in full. IDK.
It is nice that it includes several utilities such as:
Copy II+
ADTpro
Cat Doctor
Auto UnShrinkit
Blockwarden
And it sucks (did I say it before?) It sucks that they didn't give credit to Central Point Software or Glen Bredon, or the guy from ADTpro, and others.
Bugs? There's several. A simple one is that reading the text file read by VIEW.README starts with "bye"
"bye
Today, the 30-year anniversary of the
Apple IIGS, a new version of the
ProDOS operating system has been
released."
I suppose that if we really needed to, we could use sector editor from Copy II Plus to change the names in this OS to DIRECTIONS!!!!!!!!!
DIRECTIONS?? I don't get it..
While I agree that it could have been more polished and include less self-glorification, I would challenge the community here to 'do it right' and put out a ProDOS release that makes even more significant and useful changes for Apple II systems running in 2016 and beyond.
Who's up for writing ProDOS 3.0?
They put the directions on the bottom using only one line.
I think they could be better explained with all of that space on the right.
UPDATE ProDOS 2.4.1 now released.
Well it didn't take long an update is already released.
ProDOS 2.4.1 adds several improvements and bug fixes to ProDOS 2.4.
1.Includes ROM ID detection for many Apple II clones, and workarounds for clone firmware bugs.
1.Franklin Ace
2.Laser 128
3.Unitron
4.Pravetz
2.Updates MiniBas to version 1.2.
3.Fixes a bug when launching ProDOS 2.4 from GS/OS using Closed-Apple to activate Bitsy Bye.
4.Fixes a ROM bug in un-enhanced Apple //e when quitting to Bitsy Bye with 80-column mode enabled.
5.Files on disk have been organized for faster booting and file access.
6.ProDOS 2.4.1 moves GS/OS support code to the end of the file. This allows PRODOS to be shortened by 1K when used on compilation disks or other 8-bit use-cases where PRODOS will not be used as SYSTEM/P8.
7.As a minor update, the ProDOS 2.4.1 KVERSION byte at $BFFF is the same as ProDOS 2.4, (I.E., $24)
Here's the link for the update.
