I was very fortunate recently to find an Apple II reasonably priced which had the raised power light on the keyboard. I wasted no time and bought it without asking any other questions.

When it arrived I found a fairly beat up Apple II case, mostly original except that the motherboard had been swapped out sometime in 1982.

This is an A2S1 and the serial number is 19521. (Early to mid 1979 is my guess)

The power supply looks to be original, and is dated underneath of Feb 12 1979.

The foam holding the speaker is different than I've seen on later Apples, anyone know if that is original as well or has been replaced by someone over the years?

The last item I don't recall seeing is an odd clip like thing at the rear of of the bottom case... See last photo.

All I need now is a early-mid 1979 motherboard and this puppy will be restored back to its original glory!!

I'd say early 1979, and the keyboard is the right kind for this serial. So leave the keyboard (unless for aesthetic reasons you prefer the later kind), and maybe keep your eye out for a rev 3 motherboard. The original motherboard in this case would have been stamped 'around' 7909.

1978AppleII,

Yup, the Speaker foam has been replaced.
Original Foam was circular for all units.

Nah, there are plenty of square-ish ones out there.

Re: My new Apple II

Interestingly enough (to me at least) is that most of the ROMs appear to be from early 1979 but are Applesoft ROMs...

D0 == 3410011-00 (7851E)
D8 == ILLEGIBLE
E0 == 3410013-00 (7903E)
E8 == 3410014-00 (7906E)
F0 == 3410015-00 (7919E)
F8 == 3410020-00 (8052)

Thinking maybe the original owner bought the Applesoft populated ROM card and then swapped out the ROMs at some point.

Wish they had left the ROM card with the original Integer ROMs for me....

Okay here's my guess for the clip: grounding?

Yeah, I dunno. But I don't recall ever having seen one like that in the past. Anybody??

I have at least one system with that clip - I think it helps mechanically line up the enclosure top to the base, nothing more. There is a matching notch in the case enclosure. Perhaps, at some point, it was eliminated as unnecessary or perhaps a hinderance to assembly.

Yeah I dunno why they stopped doing it, but I can confirm that an earlier Apple II (7906 motherboard date) has the clip as well. AND it has the square foam around the speaker - so apparently during this time frame they were using the square foam as opposed to the round foam around the speakers.

Also has the socketed RAM selects.

Hi Steven.

So I've recently seen 4 Apple II's with the square blue foam - so I have to assume that at least for some time frame they used that instead of the circular foam they used later on.

Re: My new Apple II

If memory serves, both my Rev-0 have no foam, and my rev-4 Apple II has round foam. So I guess maybe the I between state was square foam.

Cheers,
Corey

Interesting. So perhaps Rev 3 systems?? (Guessing here)
