Hey guys, got OS 8 running on my mac lc 475. I've connected it to my windows 7 pc (crap computer...) and yes its setup for sharing. Its connected to the LC's ethernet card. The light blinks on the back of the LC but the windows computer says nothing is plugged in. Should something be setup on the lc to make this work? I chose ethernet in appletalk, chooser, and i entered all the info correctly (ip address, subnet mask.. etc). A little help?

Can't check right now, but isn't Stuffit installed on the Mac in part of the OS 8 Internet package?
First off, you'll probably need a crossover ethernet cable if you're going directly from the PC to the Mac with one cable, no matter what other things you try.
You can't just plug in cables and have it work, unfortunately. Same connection, different language. The 475 expects Appletalk, the PC expects a Windows networking protocol.
There's a few ways around this, but they're complex.
- Win2K server supported Appletalk, but XP and above don't. There's a couple programs like PC Maclan that can help, but they're commercial and MacLan is astronomically expensive.
- Install Ubuntu on the PC, and give it access to the files you want to share with the Mac. Install Netatalk in Ubuntu, which will let you set up an Appletalk share for the 475 to see.
- Install Basilisk emulator on the PC. Set it up for networking, and the 475 will see it.
I'm partially going to throw down the BS* flag.... The network cable is going to need either a switch / hub in between -OR- a crossover cable as you said, but the networking protocols is where im throwing down the flag. If they are both speaking TCP/IP which is the internet protocol and if i'm reading this correctly, then thats what he wants is internet, not file sharing, then who the hell cares if the mac is speaking appletalk and the pc is speaking cifs. its irrelevant. say that the pc has ICS turned on and its IP is 192.168.2.1 then the mac needs an ip of 192.168.2.x 255.255.255.0 and a dns of either 192.168.2.1 -OR- a public DNS like googles @ 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 the gateway also needs to become 192.168.2.1

So apparently I misread the post. You are going to need something like dave or z-ip to give you appletalk, but im not sure that they can serve afp over appletalk, im pretty sure they only work with afp over ip. its been a long time since ive used them.
Well I just got a powermac g5 to replace my dell desktop (traded). So I'm assuming it will be easier to connect apple to apple? And yeah I realized I wasnt using a crossover cable, but I was thinking it was while I was connecting it. Give me some time to get a crossover and I'll report back!
The G5 will do Appletalk. You should have no problems.
