My addiction has caused me to purchase another Apple IIe. This time, a Platinum IIe that is in very poor condition (but I got it cheap).
This one looks to have some text CARVED into the case. Not the top cover but just above the keyboard (which is missing keys). I haven't received the unit yet so I don't know how deep it goes.
So I've been thinking about how to restore this one. I thought about filling the engraving with epoxy and sanding it down. Then, paint the case. But I think the problem with that is the case has a textured feel to it and sanding it will cause a flat spot. Not sure if I could sand the entire case. Even if I could it would feel odd.
What are your suggestions?
Thanks
Look at eBay item 372093953079, consider getting a good case, maybe make the best of 2.
For the price, it's hard to justify the time and materials IMHO. But the choice is yours....
Good luck with your achievement.
Yeah, I've thought about that too. Considering this is my second Platinum (5th IIe altogether) I don't know how much time and effort I will put into it. I only paid $20 for it (plus $20 to ship) so I'm not out a lot of money for it.
Either way you have a spare motherboard and keyboard
Well, the keyboard is missing some keys and some of the key stems are broken off. Did I mention it was in bad shape? LOL
I actually have another Platinum keyboard also missing some keys. I'm hoping between the two I will have a full keyboard.
I'm betting if you can prove that both motherboards work & you want to sell one of them,
you'd get your $20 back easy peasy...
Probably so. But I don't sell very often. lol
I recently broke even on a Mac Classic I bought a while back. It was so corroded from a battery leak that the metal frame was almost completely gone. Literally the entire right side was flaking off. It was beyond destroyed. Motherboard was shot too. But, I only paid $12 for it with $12.75 shipping. Seller had to loose money on that.
The cool part is that it had an 030 accelerator installed which the original listing didn't mention! Since it had a little corrosion on that I gave it away but still received a donation for it. I managed to salvage the case and floppy from it. So I essentially got those for free.
Funny how sometimes...just sometimes....life smiles down on you. lol
If the case were to be sandblasted, it would make the carving much less noticeable. That is one approach.
The second would be to fill in the carving and sand it out and before it is painted, use a texture modifier to add back the texture that had been removed by the sanding.
I use this:
