ADTPro "Garbage received from host"

This is less an Apple II specific question and more an ADTPro-related question. However, I figured this was the best place to post it.

I'm attempting to use ADTPro on my Apple IIc to receive disk images from a PC. The host PC is actually an old 286 Toshiba portable running MS-DOS 6.22, and I'm using the MS-DOS version of ADT with a homemade null modem cable. I am fairly certain that the cable was constructed properly, because I am able to issue a (D)IR command on the IIc and successfully see a list of all files on on the host PC with no trouble. However, any attempt to receive disk images or change the working directory results in the IIc showing the error message "Garbage received from host". The host PC also briefly flashes an error on the screen when this occurs, but it disappears immediately before I can read what it says.

I have already verified that both the IIc and PC are set to the same baud rate (19200), and I have even tried slowing the speed down. Admittedly the cable could be faulty, but if that were the case, I imagine the (D)IR command wouldn't function either, yet it does.

Any ideas?

Since you've elected to go retro with the server, you have to use the old ADT version of the client software as well. The latest ADTPro client uses a protocol that the old ADT server doesn't understand. Build yourself a DOS ADT client disk (preferably the one that came with your version of server) and you'll be in business.

Re: ADTPro "Garbage received from host"

Disregard, I figured it out on my own. ADTPro is actually incompatible with the MS-DOS version of the ADT host. You have to use an older version of just plain "ADT" on the Apple II to connect it to an MS-DOS based host.

Thought I'd post this little tidbit for any future Googlers, since during my research I never found anything that outright said the MS-DOS ADT host is not compatible with ADTPro. In this case, it definitely pays to RTFM that comes with ADTDOS...something I'm guilty of not doing at first due to impatience...as it explains exactly how to get it working!

Disregard,

Too late; already answered. Wink

This page talks about what versions of ADT client are compatible with ADTPro server (it is important for you to distinguish between client and server, and which is Pro and which is not...)
http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/compatibility.html

But your observation is correct: since the ADT server code has not been touched in years, it does not know how to talk the newer ADTPro protocol:

Offtopic Wink

I was just reading David's remark about going retro with the server, when a thought crossed my mind: Wouldn't it be nice if you could use an Apple II as a server as well? That way, you could write disks for a //c from any II with a CF drive (for example) without have to use a present-day-computer.

Or am I missing something obvious?

Back to topic.

You just described Mark Percival's DiskMaker 8 (which I use myself):

Shame on me. I must have come across that program somewhere, but I have never looked into it. From what I can see on Mark's homepage, it is exactly what I am looking for. I'll try it first thing this evening.
