So here's the deal...
I "acquired" a JVC (AV-27850) 27" TV, circa 1997. It works, but there is some distortion. There seems to be a horizontal "grey" stripe through the center of the screen, which actually just looks like about 5 or 10 very thin black lines separating the display lines. The bottom 2 inches of the screen is also hosed. It seems as if there is are increasingly thicker black lines separating the display lines, and it flickers a lot.
So... can I fix it, and how?
Your vertical hold is going. Eventually, all the lines will collapse into one horizontal line across the middle of the screen.
Considering how relatively cheap TVs are nowadays, I'd just pitch it. CRTs are a pretty fragile and sensitive technology. (Which is one reason why I'm never buying anything with a CRT again.)

Well, it's not so bad that it can't be watched, and it would be a shame to just toss $150-$200 worth of TV... especially when I don't have $300 to get a brand new 27"...
He told me it was George W. And Dan Rather read it all on forged documents that he admitted he knew were forged, but still claims that what they said is true. Oh God, how I love the "unbiased" national media.
I wish I could learn how to fix CRT's as well. Getting into the "inner circle" of CRT/TV repairmen is like pulling teeth from a hen. They have to be the most selfish people around when it comes to sharing their knowledge.
If you ever try joining a message board or forum of some sort where the repairmen hang out, you will be kicked out so fast the second they realize that you are just a hobbiest and aren't a real repairman.
I remember vividly the one time i was at a tv repairboard and someone asked an intelligent question (you could tell that he wasn't a professional repairman though) about a problem tv. One of the pro repairmen answered the question in a way that explained how to fix it and he got flamed badly for it. One other repairman said something to the effect: "Are you going to pay my rent? Are you going to put food on my table? Are you going to pay my car payment? Are you going to pay the lease on my shop?, if not then shut the @#$%@#$ up!"
They are just so overly protective of their "secret knowledge". The shameful thing about it is that I would rather trash a tv or crt than have it repaired at a shop (too expensive) so I resent those kind of remarks that the tech gave to the other tech. Its like "why not give the hobbiest a hint how to fix it, hes just going to trash it anyways, and he will never bring it to a shop".
And if a real tech had asked the same question and gotten the same answer on the forum, the info would still have come into the public knowledge. If they're worried about giveing away answers, why have an internet discussion forum? Geez...
